a little faster upload would be nicer though :/
Splain it to me Rickey.. Why do you need more upload?
Coming from a Sysop from the days of 2400 baud dial-up, and having to deal with users sucking up files.. why do you NEED to have people get files from your machine?
Lets do a conjecture here so you will understand my point.
1) What files are you offering? Why let people leech..for free? ARe you planning to get something in return?
2) Web pages, are you planning to run a webserver in you rhome.. is that why you need more upload bandwidth? Ask any admin... They will tell you, the smart money is to host the webserver OTHER than your ISP. Think about how many times Cable/DSL goes down. Is it reliable enough to count on it being up? NO. And if you say "eh won't need 100%" up time, then why do NEED the increased upload speed then?
3) Ping Speeds DO NOT contend on Speed. We had good connect speeds a few years ago on a 128K ISDN playing StarCraft.. There are usually only 8 people in a game *MAX*. The ping speed is distance dependent not bandwidth. So the ping comes from the time it takes to make a round trip, not the amount of highway it has to run on.
Consider, A Ferrari on a highway. IT doesn't matter if its a 2 lane or 8 lane highway.. If ALL the lanes are full, you aren't going anywhere faster than a PT Cruiser.. Ping goes out, its only 8k.. maybe 16 or even 32 K packets.. a few mili-seconds apart.. That's it. Even if they are real time (like for Everquest), the increased bandwidth from *YOUR* machine to the server, isn't going to give you faster ping times to someone else waiting to get ACKS.. The server traffic sits on a segment.. and it waits for data to come in, do something with it, and return the info. THAT'S IT. The Server needs high DOWNLOAD (a la, CABLE/DSL) for incoming data.. So, each persons connection is UNIQUE to the server. So person A connecting to Everquest is sending data at 16k packets..(note, don't need a 1 meg uplink from that machine to Everquest), person B connecting the same...
Now I will acknowledge in your neighborhood maybe you have friends that want to SHARE Mp3's. That's fine.. however, putting those files on an external server.. is better.. they shouldn't be leeching from your connection. Why share your bandwidth? Do you want to be the local server for your entire block? Let them get their own files.. why give them yours.. at the very least, keep the bandwidth to yourself.
Now, I am very aware there are people out there that like to upload files.. That's good. But again, unless you work from home, or are a developer, as one user pointed out, 95% of people don't NEED the increased upload bandwidth. I am developer.. I am a SysAdmin/Network Engineer. ITs been years.. since I remember *EVER* NEEDING a large upload bandwidth. My time is my time, I play at home, at work we have a t3 with 3.0/3.0 u/l.. but even then.. WE don't ever use the uplink to send files.. no need. You are asking for something, because you have information that shows the number is low. You will NOT use it. So.. Realize, the importance of download bandwidth, and quit worrying about upload. Its not going to enhance your gaming experience if that's what you want it for.. What we NEED is the internet community to demand LOAD Balancing for servers.. more servers equals better connections.
1 traffic cop diverting 200 cars at 1 intersection doesn't do anyone much good. You have to wait for that one corner. 10 cops diverting 20 cars.. that's much faster.. when properly managed. A server can manage data on different segments simultaneously. Even better 2 servers or 5 servers or more, managing the SAME connection is the way to do it.. not increasing bandwidth to the same server. That's what we NEED! |
