Office 97 does not install on XPSP2 system

Did a fresh install of corporate edition XP with sp2 slipstreamed into it, no other programs installed. I then installed office97, it failed to install, and instead returned with an error "htmlmarq.ocx unable to register itself in registry". I then tried to manually register the *.ocx file via regsvr32, but another error appeared.

"htmlarq.ocx" is an active x control, so for kicks, I went to IE and turned security settings to low "default" but no go. Worse yet, you can't uninstall the failed office97 except manually, and also office97 registry eraser doesn't work properly either. Egads. Thank goodness we rolled out a domain startup script to block sp2 updates.

There is a newsgroup thread already in google about this:

»groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&l···26spell% 3D1

Apparerently something in sp2 is blocking .ocx active-x controls installation.

If anyone has a possible fix, please let us know.

Installed SP2 on my Dell 8300. Installation went easy until restart didn't start auto. Did a restart, it hung on my desktop. No icons, only background. Tried several restarts with same problem. Restarted in safemode. Restored registry to point I created before SP2 install. Restarted, desktop and icons returned. Funny thing, SP2 is still installed. Checked add/remove for SP2. Two updates in list. Not sure if SP2 is still installed and may be corrupt. Thinking of uninstalling the two updates.

Found a workaround to install office97 on an XPSP2 level machine. The workaround is to run office97 setup and uncheck the "Web Page Authoring (HTML)" in office97 setup options. It will then install fine. However of course you lose the "HTML web page authoring" option in office97.

thnx

Then again office 97 is very old program. You would think someone, would upgrade to office 2003 by now.

Most people have no use for Office2K3. Office97 is still a very good office suite. Why pay big $$$ for an office suite if you don't need any of the new features?

Exactly, office 97 fulfills a lot of needs, it's a very good suite, even thought it's almost 7 years old. I actually prefer to use it over the newer suites, in that it's very "snappy" on older hardware.

cheers

For what it is worth:
I also have a Dell 8200 and the exact same thing has happened to me. I updated to sp2, after reboot, no icons, only desktop picture background. I've restarted many times with no other response. I will remove sp2 tomorrow, unless I hear a fix from someone.

I did in fact remove updates and all was well.
Tried again, but with auto update option. I did get the initial option screen for Firewall options after install. Same problem again. I only got to my background and no icons would load. No further activity. Started in safemode, removed SP2 again and restored registry.

Has anyone seen this?

I had a problem with my install. The screen would just hang before the desk top would appear. Then I just left it alone and then the desktop appeared, but with no icons on it. Kept rebooting with the same result.

Then one time I just left it alone. Two minutes later it finally booted with the icons on the desktop.

What I thought was happening was that a service was having a problem starting. So, I looked through the system logs to see what was hanging. There is a service that looks for a camera or printer. It will hang for 2 minutes if it cannot find one. I don't have a camera and the printers are off; so it hung. I set the service not to start at boot but manually.

Worked fine.

You may have a service that is not starting/hanging at boot.

I never thought to let it sit there for a while. Too anxious. I do have my digital camera dock(auto detect) load at start-up, my scanner is opted to do a lamp warm-up at start-up and my printers are network ready at start-up. I guess it's time to disable all and give it another try.

Re: Office 97 does not install on XPSP2 system

My company recently had this problem - I discovered the solution while trying to manually register 'htmlmarq.ocx'

Open regedit and browse to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options

You should see htmlmarq.ocx and htmlmm.ocx separate keys. Rename them to something else, ie. htmlmarq.tmp and htmlmm.tmp.

You will now be able to install Office 97, including the HTML option, without incident.

DISCLAIMER: I don't know what this section of the registery does or why these files were apparently blocked (intentionally or accidently), but this solution worked flawlessly for me. If you feel uncomfortable, I'm betting you can rename the keys back to the originals and office will work, but if you need to reinstall, you'll possibly have to rename them again.
