| SBC ultra high speed trial? Legit or scam?
This was passed to me on a forum while I was discussing DSL with someone. Another person said they had gotten a special offer, and I asked about it, so they quoted this to me from an email the supposedly received:
SBC Internet Services (SBCIS) would like to offer you a chance to participate in an exciting 3-month technology trial* that will allow you to discover the benefits of Internet download speeds of up to 24 megabits per second (versus traditional DSL download speeds of up to 1.5 megabits per second). If you complete the 3-month trial, you will be given 6 monthly credits for your current SBCIS DSL Internet Service.
They said they called the number in the email and agreed to the trial, and would be contacted with more info.
My question - is that legit, or did the person just get scammed into giving out personal info? I personally think the latter. I didn't see the email itself, but just what he quoted looks suspiscious. For example, we all know that SBC offers higher than 1.5mbit, but this email claims that's the limit of traditional DSL.
If it is legit - does anyone have more info on this? Not like I'd expect it to be generally available. |

Kinda in-house, except at their house.. So I guess it's not really in-house at all. |

Well heck. I guess I'll have to make do with 6000/608, though I was starting to get really excited about that. -- I'm dying of thirst in the middle of the ocean. |

 Speed vs. Distance - ADSL2+ |
Assuming it is ADSL2+, the question was asked about distances for maximum speeds. The chart based on lab tests and limited real world trials answers that question, but it could be overly optimistic. Who knows what line condition problems are lurking in SBC's loops? That's why they are technology testing.
The upload for ADSL2+ could be up to 1 mbps depending on line conditions.

| reply to aelfwyne Interesting..... Personally I was convinced it was a scam. I'm not sure if the person who showed this to me is an employee or not. They didn't seem like it - but who knows? I'll try to find out if I can (you know how these word of mouth rumours can be!) |

Actually that sounds almost identical to a project I was involved in with SBC roughly about four years ago.
During the test, SBC pumped my DSL connection up to a full 24 Mbps over standard copper pairs and it worked surprisingly well.
I was able to maintain a rock solid connection at 22.3 Mbps and the wiring was over 30 years old !!!!
The ultra high speed DSL project was sidelined shortly after the end of that test and I hadn't heard anything more about it.
It could very well be that SBC is digging it back out of the closet and getting ready to make another go at it!
It would be a more viable technology than fiber because it utilizes the existing copper wiring that is already present across most of the network. |
