5200 Dead - Need Help

I have an SS 5200 and he was usable. In some day, when i am changing some configuration, the modem stops to respond.
After some tries, i decide to flash the firmware again (A21 from telmex) and the modem works again, but, sometimes when i am reconfiguring it, the red light keeps on.
After that, when i try to do some modification, he takes a long time and don't save the configuration, returning a error or not!
If i reboot, when i start the browser, the modem asks me for the admin password again, and comes in a clean state, again!
I have full acess to the modem by network. Can i do something by telnet to save this soul before he dies or i have to have an serial connection?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: 5200 not Dead - Need Advice

If you don't have a Solid Red Pwr (Power) LED then the 5200 is *not* Dead yet. It sounds like the files you have installed in your 5200 are corrupted though. You usually only need to add the serial console connection when the Ethernet and USB connections are 100% UNREACHABLE, but you do not have that problem.

I suggest trying a different Firmware. Use Google to see what you can find.
A3J = "France Telecom PPPoA Full Router" (1,574,972 bytes)
A29 = "France Telecom Simple Router" (1,513,341 bytes)
A2W = "Telemar Full Router"
A21 = "TelMex Full Router 2"
A0X = "Full Router GA configuration"

I have tried the following firmwares: A3J,A2W,A0X and retried A21. The last one is the current, but i cant flash the unit!
The unit gives several errors in the middle of the process.
With A21, they give me an concistency error, or simething like that, and an FTP error in the end.
The others Firmwares gives an FTP error and i cant connect by FTP to the unit, with any user!
I think i can have an currputed upro, but i cant repair it because after any configuration, by telnet or web, the unit turns the red led on and dont turn if off. If the unit reboot, i got a clean state again, with the web intarface asking me for a password for the admin user.
When i try to put a password, it takes a long time, and give me an error, and turn the red light on.
I dont know more what to do, and i dont find this type of problem in *any* message on the forums!
I am the first one with this problem???

Thanks for your attention,

Have you tried pressing the reset button on the bottom of the modem?

Yes, i have pressed and holded for 4 seconds, and the modem goes through the normal reset operation, it blinks red and green the power led and reboots normaly, but it didint solve the problem. I still cant save the admin password and the red light turns on with any configuration i made.

For many firmwares that I've seen, the red light will come on when you make a change, as it's actually writing the value and saving it to the NVRAM. That's normal. If it doesn't go away, thats not.

If you can get into telnet at some point, you could try this.

At the xsh prompt type:

do defcfg internal [enter]
do reboot [enter]

This will set the unit to factory defaults. A step deeper that the reset button. This will put the unit into factory bridge mode though, and you will have to reload any firmware that you put on the unit.

If this doesn't fix it, you may need a new modem.

i think i have tried the 'do defcfg' command without the 'internal' argument and nothings changes...

There are other parameters for the 'defcfg' command?

I will try your tip and see whats happens... and i am already looking for a new modem, but here, in Brazil, all DSL modems became very expensive in the last 3 or 4 months.

I have paid almost US$54 on my unit, but, now i only find it on local 'eBay' in prices from US$70 to US$120, and without any warranty, again....

My ISP provides for rent an modem, but totally criped and for US$7 per month!!! Each 8-10 months i pay a new 'cripped' modem!

Thanks all for the help. If anyone have more ideas, please post!

Yes, there are a couple of commands that are a little hidden. The normal "do defcfg" with a reboot, is the same thing as pressing the reset button. The "do defcfg internal" with a reboot, sets the modem back to the factory default. That is, how the modem originally arrived to you.

No-one to my knowledge has ever gotten A0X to install as it will render your modem completely useless as noted in this thread.

Believed to be the best one, but, no one managed to get this working.. It's easy to crack, but, will render your modem completely useless, and there is no way to go back.
It's actually the oldest firmware in town. Avoid it.

I have tried this one, but when i start the firmware software, it asked me for an serial number, which one i dont have and i quit. Actually, i dont have *really* tried this one!

There's any "cli" guide for this modem available?

Thanks for the advice!

Slightly off-topic: I'm looking for a new modem here in Brazil, too. Please send an instant message if you want to talk about it.

Ther is no CLI guide as far as I know. Efficient probably has some documentation, but doubtful that they will share it. I know a bit on how the command line interface runs, and how to change things, but it sounds like a hardware problem to me. When you flash the modem with any firmware, it clears out the NVRAM memory during the process (which is where the problems stem from), and then stores the new values from the firmware you just loaded. Nothing should be left behind from any previous changes that were made manually. If the modem is no better after a re-flash or by a reset (clears the memory also), than it would seem like a hardware problem to me.
