Re: [Vonage] PAP2 Phone Adapter cancel fee ?!

I just got one of these things from Staples. I assumed it would work with any SIP provider as that is what the Linksys web site says. Guess I was wrong.

At first, I was able to access the web interface, but it still didn't allow configuration of the SIP provider. However, now that it managed to download the files from Vonage, the web interface will not respond.

Re: [Vonage] Linksys PAP2 Phone Adapter with Vonag

Motorola unit has one BIG problem: if you have DHCP server enabled it pushes IP addresses on BOTH sides if the router. It slows down your bandwith or intermit. disconnects you from ISP. Now make a decision- what is better.

Before it downloaded from Vonage, which web pages could you get to?

chromant

@verizon.net

So, I've got a "virgin" PAP2, and slapped into a small, non internet connected testbed. Could get to the web pages. Forgot to capture screenshots, but they seemed to be some basic info and some standard pages I've seen in other sipura 2000 config pages.

There is a link marked "admin options" or some such. Need a username/password to authenticate. Didn't do the obvious admin/linksys trick (that's still their default pw setup, right?)

One thing I *did* notice was that the ****73738# trick with the ethernet unplugged. Surprised I got the "press 1 to continue, press * to cancel" phrase. No passcode entered. Of course, resetted the thing, but haven't tried checking the web interface again.

Food for thought, or a place to start experimenting.

chromant

@umass.edu

So, the reset didn't do what I thought it would (hopefully) do. The admin pages still ask for a password. And admin/linksys doesn't work either. Oh well.

I did mirror the pages off the device though, if people want them, I can put them up somewhere after I scour out the MAC address.

Lastly, snagged the new firmware with a tftp client. parts of the firmware look suspiciously like the Sipura 2000 firmware (no surprise). Anyone want to risk bricking their device?

@comcast.net

Where did you get the firmware from? I've looked on the Linksys tftp site, but could not find it (maybe I was looking in the wrong place).

chromant

@umass.edu

I don't think Linksys has a *t*ftp site. They have an ftp site. Anyways, the file location came from some other post. Basically the file sits on a tftp server in vonage.net land. Just pointed a tftp client at it and downloaded the firmware.

Still stuck at no access to the admin pages however. The Sipura flashing program fails as well, needing a password. At least I didn't brick the PAP2

Re: [Vonage] Linksys PAP2 Phone Adapter with Vonage

Just of note, i was able to reset to factory settings 877778 and pressing 1 to confirm. it did not ask for any password. Also, i spoke to vonage, and they said the unit has features the MOTO MTA doesn't have, one is distinctive ringing. I mainly bought this this unit so i could use it upstairs for a 2nd phone on the same account, but Vonage saids I can't do that for two weeks. I guess they working to make it so we can add other Phone adapters to our accounts. Is it possible to register this this unit MAC ID, and then Clone it to the MOTO MTA? Would the servers think it's the PAP2 Connecting? Vonage saids no, because of encryption. Yes, the PAP2 does have a Configuration Address (a guy at vonage tech support told me I was pushing him for info. when he let that slip...lol)for now I'm gonna wait the two weeks, and if they dont have it ready to add a 2nd device to accounts, then I'll take it back.

CORRECTION- I was asked for the password on the 2nd one to reset to factory settings (didn't know there was two until i checked again) anyways the password's probably something easy, like admin or user. (i tried em both, and neither one worked) I guess it's time to harrass vonage and force them to give me the password, or take it back and disconnect my service all togather. they're suckers when it comes to users threatening disconnecting their service.

Re: [Vonage] Linksys PAP2 Phone Adapter with Vonag

Distinctive ringing would be nice. Please keep plugging away, this sounds like an upgrade from the Moto box and may be in my future if they exploit the features. So far, though, I can't complain about the Moto box.

Re: [Vonage] Linksys PAP2 Phone Adapter with Vonage

after viewing the incomming log of my linksys wrt54g router, I noticed one entry which said Source IP 65.182.130.252 Destination Port Number WWW, I typed this address in the address box of internet explorer »65.182.130.252/ and got a page under construction error. kinda strange? Could this possibly be the PAP2's Configuration address? I doupt it but worth a try.

The Difference is...

The PAP2 does not have QoS. The RT31P2 does - thus the price difference. No matter what, if you put any ATA behind a firewall, none do QoS (Quality of Service that gives the VOIP more bandwidth when in use) that I am aware of. Behind a ENET router no ATA does QoS unless your router can be configured by port for QoS (which most routers do not offer). Others have posted that they have no noticeable bandwidth hit with the ATA behind the cable/dsl modem in front of a router.

I would be interested to hear about security issues with the ATA in front of the firewall.

From what I have read, most ATAs are problematic behind a hardware firewall. Interesting is that the VOIP providers don't mention security. Plug and play for VOIP is right behind the cable/dsl modem.

I have LINGO as of today and all is well. I will post a LINGO review in a few days after spending some time with it.

As far as VOIPing the house through the existing jack wiring, you MUST disconnect the POTS from your household network box before plugging the ATA into a house jack or it will fry the ATA. My POTS is pushing 52V DC into the lines as measured with a voltmeter.

Re: [Vonage] Linksys PAP2 Phone Adapter with Vonage

The Motorola adapter acts as a bit of a router... it's suggested installation is between the modem and the computer (single comp installation) or between the modem and a real router. There are two ethernet ports on it. In this fashion they can offer QoS... prioritize voice traffic above data. HOWEVER, the Motorla adapter has at least one flaw that has significance to me... it does not support all tunneling protocols used for VPN. So, therefore, in cases like mine, it must be installed behind the router and is then unable to implement QoS.

The PAP2 product from Linksys is like this... it has only one ethernet connection and so must be installed behind the router. The Linksys RT31P2 is a phone interface and a router and can implment QoS.

I'm new to this, so have a question: Shouldn't a normal router (mine is a microsoft product with a WAP) also allow a particlar connection to have higher priority? Thereby assuring Qos?

Thanks,
Dave

Unfortunately Dave_000, most consumer grade routers do not support QoS of any type. Even one that claims to (Linksys BEFSR81) actually only supports it between LAN ports, not from LAN to WAN ports as would be necessary to prioritize traffic for upstream transmission.

Re: [Vonage] Linksys PAP2 Phone Adapter with Vonag

SO hears my question then. Would we all prefer to have something small and easy to travel like the PAP2 or something with a hybrid form of QOS like the 31P2 or the Moto or up and coming netgear ?

There is a way to implement true QoS in an inexpensive router. I currently run a Linksys WRT54GS with Sveasoft's latest firmware, Alchemy. With a WRT54G or GS and Alchemy you can implement true up and downstream QoS, with many options. You can set priorities for IP addresses or ranges, ports, or MAC addresses. You can set it for WAN port only, or LAN and WAN ports. I'm using it with my Vonage service, and have crystal clear voice calls even when surfing the net and/or up or downloading files. Sveasoft firmware has about 35 other features over and above the stock Linksys firmware. You can implement OSPF routing, VLANS, DHCPD and many others. Kind of like having a corporate-grade router/WAP for around $99.00. Check the firmware out at »www.sveasoft.com

Cheers,

Even the latest WRT54G firmware has basic QoS, although not nearly as sophisticated as the Sveasoft firmware. I'm using it with Vonage and it does a pretty good job. I gave up on Sveasoft for awhile because there are simply too many bugs in the latest Alchemy--particularly for those on a PPPOE DSL connection. Once things settle down with Sveasoft firmware I'll give it a try again (I am a paying member).
