Keius join:2004-08-26 Ellicott City, MD | reply to King75 After 2 months of verizon dsl service at 1.5/384, I have suddenly been capped at 768/128. Had to call to find out why the speed was so bad. Got redirected to person after person. Each person i talked to bs'ed me. One person i talked to claimed my dsl modem was working overtime and that was why my speeds were so good at first.. and that because of the modem working overtime, the modem quality degraded and could no longer handle the load and became unstable (sync problems).(incredible load of bs!) Verizon claimed that my line was 21k+ feet from central and that was why it had to be capped(it worked for 2 solid months). 21k+ feet shouldn't have worked with my original speeds!! Of course...lets not forget I was originally quoted as having a line 14k feet from central when i originally got verizon dsl installed.
Only real reason I could think of is that they rerouted my line to another CO or added a lot of new taps in the local network (therefore increasing the effective wirelength by 7k feet???)....or they are simply capping me and making up bs reasons. |

 | reply to brownrd Same here... does your ip starts with 60. i used to be 138 before my upload went south.. but im not calling them up i'll be moving soon so i see not point.

Ha ha ha,
So your modem joined a Union and cut it's hours? VZ is just too funny (and sad since they're SCREWING up your service royal).
Verizon never ceases to amaze me, just when I thought I heard the biggest pile of B.S., someone elses posts and even wilder line. -- »www.scaryjohnkerry.com | »media1.streamtoyou.com/rnc/080304v1.wmv | Don't have it, demand it! »www.theanimenetwork.com |

Amazing what those supposed techs can come up with when they assume they're talking to someone who doesn't know anything about technology. That they're using those bs lines means that some ppl are actually falling for it... sigh..
I was expecting him to tell me that the modem needed a much earned vacation next :P
Just an fyi...i've got 12 yrs in the IT field. Coulda put the tech down about his bs....but...i'll prob just go back to Comcast next month instead. Bit more expensive but...4x's as fast downloading and 2x the upload. Only went to Verizon cuz of free usenet and slightly cheaper.
Too good to be true i guess....anything decent comes with a higher pricetag...(damn comcast has those monthly downld/upld caps though...sigh) |

I just came from comcast. If you use direct tv it is not slightly cheaper its 2x as much and NO newsgroup access and the speeds vary greatly.
I can understand your fustration though, Id be pissed if I were stuck suddenly at 128/768 that is some BS. Comcast is not the best ISP though IMO. -- I tie a rope around my penis and jump from a tree, don't you wanna grow up to be just like me!!!! |

Just a thought. People may actually start considering that when they move. |

Third and Fourth Phone call to Appeals... Okay...today, I called and got a status update from Presidential Appeals. The gentlemen who is assisting me has never once returned a phone call as promised. I called today because he told me the database is updated on Thursday, and that he missed the deadline last Thursday. I figured I would call and remind him on Wednesday - just so he wouldn't forget. He promised me that it would get updated this time. He also said he would have billing call me so they could get my speed corrected. I then reminded him that billing couldn't help me until the database is corrected. He said, "Oh yeah!". Just to bring you up to speed, the loop length (this time) is supposed to be 10,500 feet from the CO.
Imagine my surprise when I got a phone call from billing anyway. They called to confirm my speed increase, since my Loop Length is "13,200" feet. I hit the roof. I told her to stop EVERYTHING. I called Mr. Andrews, who told me he didn't know why they had that loop length, and he promised me he would fix it. WILL THIS EVER END????? WHY ME?????? |

Re: Downgraded AGAIN This seems like an appropriate place to tell a story that is even more absurd than the laughable Verizon tech explanations.
I live in Brazil and have DSL service--maxed out at the amazingly slow speed of 768/256, which is the best that can be done where I'm located (other options include 256/128).
My wife's parents live in a house beside ours, and share the same street address. When her father saw my broadband service in action, he decided he wanted it as well.
So he called the telco to order DSL. The phone company told him he is "too far" from the switching station. When he pointed out there is already one working DSL account at that address, the telco still insisted he was too far for DSL.
Of course, he pointed out the absurdity, since he can look out the window and see the line that brings DSL to a location about five feet from the room he was sitting in. He also pointed out that the bill for that DSL service goes to the same address. The explanation: "Well, maybe it wasn't too far when you got that account, but it is too far now."
He has been fighting for broadband for six months now, and the telco won't budge. Meanwhile, my service continues to work just fine, as it has for the past 18 months--despite the fact that by their reasoning I am also "too far."
What makes this even more ridiculous is that I know where the switching station is located, and we're at about 60% of the maximum distance quoted by the telco for DSL. Not to mention the fact that the neighbor three doors down also has the service. |

If you were at 21k feet, you wouldn't have even qualified for 768/128 service. They mysteriously increase your loop length so that they can cap you at lower speeds and thus make room for more customers, it's quite simple. I too am "lucky to be getting DSL at all" out here at "22k feet". My 710/135 speed tests seem so marginal *sarcasm*.
Toollio: if your father-in-law is so close, why not just set up a wireless network and split the bill with him? |

 | said by Cursin Daily: Toollio: if your father-in-law is so close, why not just set up a wireless network and split the bill with him?
I've thought of that. But my heavy use of VOIP for business calls during the day to North America (I use Vonage) rules that out. My father-in-law would undoubtedly start downloading and uploading (he's retired) while I'm on the phone. VOIP at 768/256 isn't robust enough to handle that, even with bandwidth shaping. Plus, wireless equipment is extremely expensive and difficult to find in this part of Brazil.
But if he insists I may have to capitulate to keep my wife from killing me |
