Re: My FIOS install

Changes every 24 hours? I'm at 3 weeks and counting. My last change was only because a reboot of the router caused by my changing wireless channels.

your router shouyld refresh every 24 hours, and should pull a diffrent IP everytime. That is the reason Verizon is set up for PPPoE, for secrity reasons, they want you to pull a diffrent IP everytime

What are you basing this on? Sure, an ISP can reset it whenever they like, and maybe there are routers that do it, but I have yet to encounter either. I've had SBC PPoE, various flavors or ISDN (PPP) and now Verizon FIOS (PPoE) and none have changed IP addresses unless I lost power or tinkered with the router/modem.

Maybe I have just been lucky, but since we are talking about FIOS, and I have FIOS, it doesn't renew every 24 hours with my Linksys Router. Believe me, I would know... I check it every few days.

Of course the first thing I check on the router is to make sure it is set to not idle disconnect.

·Verizon FIOS

when I looked at other peoples tests, someone clames to be capped at 15/5 .. »/archive?zip=&···t=Search

But yeah I think it should be 5mbit upload, it's the upload everyone wants.. I guess they are really just afraid of all the illegitimate uses.

but 5mbit would be sweet for a game server, not saying 2mbit isn't enough, but 5mbit could have multiple game servers

BTW, does verizon allow game servers on it? if not that is pretty stupid, they advertise fios as being the best thing for gaming, if they don't allow game servers then it's really no better than cable or dsl (as long as your ping is low the speed it self doesnt matter for playing, 1mbit is the same as 100mbit)

but even 2mbit would be a dream, if both people have such connections and good cams they could have a true real time full fps video conference.

@verizon.com

I work for Verizon as a Fiber Support Analyst (the people you call when/if it breaks) and as far as I know we don't care if you run a game server or whatever. Also I read earlier that someone asked if 30mbps is enough to carry a HD signal for video, video and voice are run on seperate wavelengths and do not use any of your data BW. It's all seperated.

@bankofamerica.com

I'm scheduled for Verizon FIOS in Rowlett, TX right before the end of this year (2004)... and I remember when Comcast used to freely allow multiple IP's and not worry about the running of "personal servers" -- I hope Verizon isn't to quick enforcing it's TOS ie. "3.6.E You may not use the Broadband Service to host any type of server personal or commercial in nature."

okay, my family used moved to the next city over and we live in a new housing developement with 27 phrases taking place. I saw a verizon truck installing lines underground and decided to go talk to him and ask him if this new location will be able to have dsl and he told me that this area is going to be able to have something way better than dsl, at that point i wanted to hug him =P. Anyways what exactly will be the benefits of this besides that nice speeds? Like will i be able to have Video on demand etc...?

Well all you bastards getting FIOS now I hate you!
Well I really do but I would also like to congratulate you
on getting it already.
I dont know when and even if it's going to come Glendale Queens.
Well if infact if it does come here I dont think it'll happen by 2010, correct me if i'm wrong please. Better yet prove me wrong tell me it will be here sooner!!!!
I just switched from RR to Verizon DSL and got the promotional package 3mbps / 768 kbps. I'll be happy with it for now. Although the minute FIOS gets here I'm switching, no questions asked
Take care

Congrats man! Great speed!;)

Just need to know one thing; I got friends in Italy that have fiber, and their speed are almost like yours, not quite as fast but close. Their connection is symmetric, that means same D/U, but that is not important also, cause I would be more then pleased with an asymmetric like yours. What I really want to know is, if your main IP, that one before the router I intend, is a regular IP (such as 67.189.xxx.xx) or it looks like you are part of a network (192.xxx.xxx.xxx)like it is in Italy? If you have a regular IP is it a static or a dynamic one?

Congrats Again

Oh boy, if Fishel is doing the work you might want to up your home owners insurance.. I cant count the number of line breaks we have responded to because of them. Lets just hope the crews in your area are better then those out here.

Fios looks really impressive so far but, ill just post this
so all of you will know what is on the horizon for cable modem.

cable companies are waiting for cablelabs to finalize the specs for docsis 3.0 and to release them to modem manufacturers.

cable system is already set up for docsis 3.0, right now they are running docsis 1.1 or 2.0.

once they have docsis 3.0 in place they will have the capability of 200+ mbps downloads and 100 mbps upload.

and in case you are wondering if i mistyped, no i didnt you read correctly. 200+ down, 100 up

Hmm, sounds promising.
Where are they going to get the needed bandwith for such rates ?

the system is already capable of handling these speeds, they just need cablelabs to finalize specs and implement everything

ill post some links below:

Ah I see, well it does look awesome.
Any info on when it'll be implemented ? Will it be by 2010 ?
And also the prices... I think they'll be a lot more than current rates, and also bandwith restrictions on a montly basis.

That's great but according to your links DOCSIS 2.0 is capable of 40 mbps down and 30 mbps up yet you get nowhere near that.
All smoke and mirrors my friend.
