Re: DI-524 bios 1.05 disconnects

FWIW, here's my v1.05 experience--

I bought an extra DI-524 on sale a couple of months ago with the intention of setting up a small wireless network for my parents. Just for grins I pulled it out of the box earlier this week, loaded v1.05 firmware, and configured it to otherwise match my production DI-524 running v1.03 firmware. Nothing but problems with the v1.05 unit. I have three wired systems and two wireless active, WEP-128, Open Auth, SSID broadcast on, MAC filtering, a few IP filters, a few ports forwarded, and some logging.

After wasting over an hour with v1.05, I reverted it to v1.03. Works reasonably well with v1.03. I'm actually experimenting with using the pair as APs at the moment. It would be nice if Dlink would produce a stable release with all features available, including WPA/802.1x, radio control, and enhanced timekeeping.

Well, I am on day 20 with the 524 running 1.05 FW. I haven't had a single issue with the wired or wireless connections. Very happy with this router, it has been rock solid.

Hey NetEng_Dude, the 524 has WPA and it works great. I've been using it from day one with a Centrino based notebook with Intel Pro 2100 wireless. I am using WinXP SP2 and letting windows manage the wireless. Sorry to hear of everyone's problems....

On day 1: 2 hours, strong signal and working well.

Perhaps the preloaded v 1.05's work better than the previous releases. I just hope I can make it at least half a year without experiencing all kinds of problems. And maybe by then D-Link will have a new firmware, or I'll just rollback to 1.03. Just like a car, right now I just want something that works.

I was doing ok with 1.05 but then I added (upgraded) to belkins usb g adapter. before I had a netgear and while the disconnects appeared on the sys tray, it didnt sever the connections. Unfortunatly the belkin didnt fare as well and about 35 percent of the time it actually couldnt regain connection unless I opened up belkins config panel (yay.. more buggy crap). So 1.03 I went. Havnt seen any disconnections since, how ever my wifi net speed has changed.. its wierd.

My cable modem (connects at 100mbit btw) can achieve 350kbytes, and indeed my 100mbit connected computer can achieve that no problem. But my wifi computers are getting no higher then 140kbytes a second now. How ever G speeds are still fast (I use an 80 meg test file, normal is 45 second transfer time, right now its at about 60 seconds).

really freaking annoying... this is slow as all hell now.

hmm no edit buttons...doh.

Well after all night of playing with it, changing encryption methods, tweaking the wireless settings, I was still unable to get any more then 200kbytes/sec (cable is 350). I decided to pick up netgears 614 to replace it and from the get go the netgear has worked wonderfully with the belkin and dlink adapters.

Saddly I prolly wont take the dlink back, because the pc adapter that comes with it alone is still worth the $20 (AR though). Maybe if dlink releases a new firmware i'll sell it. but damn, I am never buying another dlink product again. I had a dlink switch that lost a few ports after a year, a dlink nic that also died one day, the router which dosnt work, and even the pc card is only usable because I manually disabled the reg.exe program (which I have no clue what its use for besides farking up your system).

How exactly do you rollback to 1.03? I've tried, but the box just reboots and I'm back at 1.05.

After reading the support docs on firmware upgrades, I noticed I don't see the "continue" button as described in the docs.

Any ideas?

Upon further watching, the 34 minute disconnect cycle seems to be triggered by filesharing programs. Not sure which, though (I use Shareaza and Kazaa Lite).

I wrote a script which logs changes in the connection, and its very consistently 34 minutes. +/- 5 seconds at most.

Basically the router is just getting overloaded by the traffic and resetting itself. (Not sure why 34 minutes specifically, though. That'd be up to a D-Link engineer to answer.)

While I'm no expert, this indicates a security vulnerability, since someone could purposely flood D-Link routers with this sort of traffic in order to cause a denial of service.

I recall a virus which targeted a similar vulnerability in Cisco routers this past summer. It took down a lot of businesses for many days, and many of them simply moved to the competition. The same could easily happen to D-Link if they don't fix this soon.

tlbj6142: These are the crash recovery method (driver rollback) instructions straight from D-Link's site:

Crash Recovery
If you are experiencing router reboots, try using the crash recovery method and reflashing an earlier firmware. Download the firmware you wish to use from »support.dlink.com/downloads. To crash recover:

Step 1 Unplug the power from the router. Hold in the reset button and plug the power back in. Continue holding for 10 seconds and then release.

Step 2 Statically assign an IP address to your computer in the same IP subnet range: 192.168.0.x where x is any number between 2 and 254. Your Subnet Mask should be 255.255.255.0.

Step 3 Open Internet Explorer and browse to 192.168.0.1. You should see the crash recovery page. Browse to the location of the firmware on your hard-drive and click the send button.

Your router should now be stable and ready to configure.

I was just curious if anyone has an idea how to stop these random disconnects. I have tried both firmwares and I recently reverted back to 1.03 yet I still have the same problems. /i have spoke with dlink twice already and no luck there either. If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it

I have a 524 running 1.05. It is the "B" version though. I was initially getting disconnects because of the security level (WEP,WPA, WPA-PSK) I was running. I set up for WPA-PSK and got the disconnects. Switched back to WEP, no problems.

Day 27 for me and still no hint of a problem. WPA-PSK works great. FW 1.05, version A1. It has been more stable than my prior 614+ and 824VUP routers. I couldn't be more impressed, great bang for buck....

just wanted to say that I've only had mine a day, and it's been great. I have 1.05 firmware factory installed. I'm running 128bit WEP with no other filtering.

I'm a heavy user with a home office, two ThinkPads, one has Centrino based internal wireless the other Atheros internal wireless, plus two hardwired machines. My internet is used probably a solid 10-12 hours with lot's of big downloads.

I did get one disconnect while I was out for lunch, I have no idea what caused it...at the time the thinkpad was sitting right beside my 2.4 Ghz phone base. I have the router in a very bad place, it's right on top of a computer monitor, beside the main relay box to my house, which is beside a washer/dryer/freezer, and underneath a stairwell..I left it their while I was setting up, but I got a strong signal throughout my home, even 3 stores up so I left it their.

this is my 3rd router, and it was the easiest to setup, and has great range.

I have just stumbled across this thread. I have been having the same problem and will try the 1.03 firmware. Basically, my Media MVP player will cause the router to crash within a few minutes. (The media MVP is a networked MPEG2 video player.) This is on a wired connection, no wireless involved. I am guessing that the problem is related to high bitrate streams, possibly may be specific to the UDP protocol.

*** UPDATE *** I have installed the 1.03 firmware, and after sorting out 1 glitch with the WAN being set to 100, I have the router and Media MVP working flawlessly.

I don't know whether this will help much, and I don't fully understand why it would help....(sounds promising doesn't it : )
But try setting the MTU of the NIC in the computer connected to the router to the same thing as whats listed in the WAN menu.
The only theory I have is that making them the same reduces overhead in the router by not making it fragment every packet that comes to it.

I was having this problem with both firmware versions real bad. If I was downloading anything big or doing anything that really exercised the WAN part of the router, I couldn't stay connected for more than a few minutes.

After setting this I'm now streaming music, downloading and surfing, and it's been a whole 20 minutes!!

Good luck.

Just another case:

I too was having the diconnect problem w/ my DI-524 router, using the 1.05 firmware. I thought it was random, but after inspecting a log from ICQ, I too saw it was happening every 34 minutes. Downgrading the firmware to 1.03 worked flawlessly. It's now been up for hours w/o a single disconnect...

Hopefully this issue will be addressed in a future firmware update...

I have this router that came with 1.05 installed. It worked great out of the box for about a month. Then suddenly I started getting the disconnect issue. These disconnect were not random.
Very annoying when you are trying to video conference. The disconnect only appeared to be happening on the desktop. I would not observe the disconnect bubble when using my wireless laptop?
I read everything I could on the subject. I had tried every thing; enable this, disable that, resets, new cables, repair XP, etc... Every thing except a full clean and reinstall of XP.
I was only moments away from wiping the hard drive and starting from scratch when I found this forum. I'm soooo glad I did. This was the only place I found the suggestion to roll back the firmware to 1.03
It's been three full days since, and not one disconnect.
Hello D-Link, firmware upgrades are suppose to be an improvement over previous versions !!!!
Thanks to everyone here for your suggestions.

Ive noticed a slightly different problem with my di-524 relating to disconnects. 3 Days ago I upgraded cable modems from a Terayon to a Motorola Surfboard (docsis). I must say I’m sorry to see the Terayon go. Its been flawless for more than 3 years.

I’m actually writing this as I re-flash (downgrade) to 1.03 from 1.05. Its 2am. As I read through the previous msgs I noticed one distinct difference. I have been successfully running 1.05 for about 3 months. No disconnects! On either wan or lan side. Now, after doing my cable modem upgrade I started experiencing repeated disconnects, wan side only. Occurrence time is at least once every 2 hours. Nothing had changed on my internal lan, hardware-wise, cabling, or computers using the lan. Even plugged into the same port on the power bar! The only factor that changed was the cable modem and suddenly I started having the annoying disconnect issue. Very strange. Discussing the matter with a knowledgeable and professional employee at Shaw (actually used linux and unix at home like me), he was very interested in the disconnects and together we speculated various circumstances which could be triggering this on their side. I was pushing my idea it was cable modem related, because it was definitely NOT happening prior to the swap. He felt it was a relatively unknown problem, yet agreed potentially a big one. At least big for annoyance factor.

--- Its been 8 hours since my 1.03 downgrade, and not a single disconnect. I suspect my problem has been solved. I cant say why it only happened once the docsis was connected on v1.05, but something was triggering the reset.

Another unrelated problem I found with di-524 and WEP enabled on 1.03 was with a wireless XP notebook. Frequently I could connect to the AP/router yet not obtain a ip. The router seemed incapable of sending back the ip. I watched the traffic off the notebook, lots of dhcp requests, yet no replies. Again, this was after a successful WEP connection. WEP off, there was no problems obtaining a ip. Another dlink bug?

Hope this info helps. Im regretting buying Dlink now.

Thanks all,

Keith

Try resetting to factory defaults, first:

Step 1 Locate the reset pinhole on the back of the unit.
Step 2 With the router powered on, press and hold the Reset button.
Step 3 Hold the Reset button for about 10 seconds.
Step 4 Release the Reset button.
Step 5 The device is now at factory defaults.

frusturated

I Hate Dlink. I think Im going to call their customer support and just scream a couple of times just to give them the frustration theyve given me. Im using a rca cable modem on comcast cable. I am getting the 30 minute reset too. It doesnt affect my computer usage since it reconnects right away but it doesnt make me very popular with online gaming. Specificaly xbox online gaming. I also have a netgear rp614 that i love. It never reset, was easy to configure and i would still be using it if it had 802.11g capability. Also the xbox and my computer are connected on the LAN ports. So I know its not the cable modem, and ive done everything dlink asked, Ive assigned a static ip to the xbox disabled ppoe , you name it. I HATE DLINK. oh and my firmware was 1.05 out of the box(still reset) I upgraded to 1.05 (3 days newer than my firmware)and it STILL RESETS. I HATE DLINK! I HOPE THE PEOPLE WHO FALSELY ADVERTISED THIS ROUTER ROT IN HELL!!!
