[Vonage] Help With Linksys WRT54G and VT1005V

So last week my new Linksys router crashed. So linksys sent me a new one. It just arrived today and now i can't get my phone service back up. I have the vonage router behind my Linksys router and I can see that it is getting an IP address and it is handing out an IP address to the PC that is attached to it.

What am I missing here?

After waiting on hold, I filled out a help desk ticket on line to get support. Hopefully I can get this resolved tomorow.

1. Probably, you have a DNS problem. Both the Vonage and the Linksys have default local IP addresses of 192.168.1.1 The Vonage router probably thinks it should be able to resolve DNS settings and it can't since only the Linksys can do that, unless you know your DNS settings and have them entered appropriately into the Vonage. Try changing the local IP address of the Vonage to 192.168.1.2 and set it to use the LInksys as it's gateway (192.168.1.1) and for DNS resolution.

2. Another idea is to not use the WAN port on the Vonage router. Connect it to the Linksys using LAN ports on both devices and see if that helps. This avoids the router functions of the Vonage router making it essentally a switch for the Linksys.

Good luck.

How do I do that? How can I give the MTA a static IP address?

Well, I don't own an MTA just I can only generally suggest:

In your web browser setup, find the "internet connection type" and change it from "DHCP or Auto" to "Static". That should open a display for boxes for you to enter a static IP, gateway IP, and DNS settings. Use 192.168.1.2 or something other than the LInksys' IP address for the statis IP, then enter the Linksys' IP (192.168.1.1) for the gateway and DNS (unless you know how to get your DNS then I'd enter the real numbers if possible).

Now, for the router's local IP address, try something as long as it isn't the Linksys' IP address. 192.168.1.2 might work as both WAN and LAN on the MTA or you might have to use a third IP like 192.168.1.3 for the LAN IP address.

Now for DHCP on the LAN side of your MTA. Either turn it off if you don't plan to plug anything in or choose a set of numbers that the LInksys will not use. Linksys usually assigns DHCP numbers from 192.168.1.100 - 200 or so. If the MTA gives out the same DHCP address, you'll need to change them to 192.168.1.200 and up.

Common problems here when you have two routers connected in a network. Conflicts regarding local IP addresses and which router will resolve DNS.

Although I'm sure the advice above is worth a try if all else fails, the truth is that most people, including me, are able to make the WRT54G and the Motorola work without changing anything on either box.

One thing to clarify is whether the Motorola box has the latest firmware. The newer versions of WRT54G firmware (I think it is 2.4.2 and above) will not work properly with Vonage Motorola boxes that don't have 1.17 firmware or later. All you will get is four flashing lights and your service will not connect.

You need to use the Vonage web interface to check the firmware version of the Motorola. If it is 1.16 or less, remove the WRT54G from the setup and hook up the Motorola to your modem, following Vonage instructions. Then you should get a Vonage connection. Then call tech support and ask them to push 1.17 firmware. Try the router setup again.

Of course, if you already have 1.17 firmware for the Motorola, ignore this advice. In that case you can also try forwarding port as recommended in the Vonage manual. It's usually not necessary, but may work.

How do I find out the firmware of my MTA? What you are describing sounds like my issue. If I go directly to the MTA I can connect. But if it is after the router, 4 flashing lights.

Hook up a PC via its network card to the PC port on the Motorola box. Type 192.168.102.1 in IE or another web browser. This should get you into the Motorola configuration interface. Go to the help page. You'll find the firmware version listed there.

Cool. Thanks a bunch. I will do that when I get home. This sounds like what the issue is. If it is a firmware issue, how long will it take to get Vonage to flash the new firmware?

A helpful tech person will get it done immediately. It should take only a few minutes or less to download.

And a thanks to Toollio for pointing us in the right direction. I had exactly the same problem. Upgrading the Motorola box to firmware ver 1.17 worked for me also.
