| reply to sh00tfire Re: [Vonage] Vonage PSTN problem
Vonage has been having PSTN problems for a long time.
One of the issues that I have explained to them, and have given up, is the way they gatekeep the connection to the pstn. Their equipment will generate its own ring, and not allow the audio of the ring from the pstn to transport to your ear until the caller answers. This results in 1 serious issue. What if the number is no longer in service, and vonage's switch does not detect the line out of service.. You hear it ring and ring and ring as if it was really ringing. When really the pstn is playing back the Out of service message. I will re-create the issue right now and allow you all to test it. We need to make this known to Vonage, and now I am going to step up to the plate and let you all know.. Call them and let them know. They claim its the issue with the pstn toll free number, but I own it and it works just fine!!!
This does not hold true for all numbers but I have noticed it on a few. Including Cellular phones.. When I call, same thing, normally a cellular subscriber will have no voicemail, after a few rings, or if the cell phone is off, the cellular network plays a message that says the caller is unavail, or out of the service area. When I call on Vonage, I hear ring,,,,,, ring,,,,,,, ring.....
You get the point..
Here is a toll free number you can test with.. First call it with a pstn, and then call it with vonage... Now with my call reporting on the toll free, I can see that you are attempting to call the line even though I have it set out of service.... But you hear ring,,,,,,ring,,,,,,ring......
The number is 1-866-755-6668...
Try it.. Please report what happens.. Tell me what happens when you call the pstn, and then tell me what you get when you call using the vonage line...
Ok the line is setup, I have the line setup with a "not in service" message.. With a normal pstn, you will hear it, and with vonage.. it will just ring and ring and ring..
Please test it, and report your findings to Vonage tech support.. If we can flood them with this issue, they will fix it.. They won't listen to me, even though I am smarter then them and know exactly what they are doing wrong with their server..

Don't you mean "smarter than them?" - Sorry couldn't resist.
I dialed the number from a POTS line and received the "not in service" message.
However after dialing from Vonage, I just receive constant ringing. This is an interesting problem. I wonder what other numbers I have called have been like this.
I am going to send Vonage an email about it. | | ejrobinson Premium join:2003-05-16 Miami Beach, FL | reply to bellhater Using vonage: error message saying the number cannot be reached from my calling area.
Using lingo: error message reporting the number is no longer in service.

| reply to bellhater I have continuous ringing problem even if the caller hangs up and I wonder if it has the same cause. I called from the Vonage to a pstn line, then I hung up the Vonage, the caller, after the pstn began to ring, but the pstn phone, the callee, continued to ring and ring and ring.
Now, while the pstn was STILL ringing, I called to it from my cellphone which got busy tone, but dial to and from Vonage was ok since the Vonage line had perfect dial tone. The only problem was a call from this dial tone is always very choppy.
The problem only occur when I call from Vonage to an unanswered phone. The pstn will eventually stop after about 2 minutes, or if the pstn is picked up by human or answer machine, or if Vonage box is power cycled.
I have both Vonage and pstn in the same room so I hear actual ringing, not through phone. They have the same telephone area code. The Vonage is through Comcast cable modem and its phone are directly connected to the Vonage Motorola box. The pstn is SBC land line and operated from wall jack; nothing to do with cable. | |
