1 edit | [Vonage] wrt54g problems with Vonage... Hi all, I just upgraded my router to a Linksys WRT54G specifically to obtain the qos feature that many have endorsed here. I previously had a Netgear WGR614 which was working fine with my Vonage service, albeit with no qos. I have TW cable service 3M down/384 up.
Quick synopsis of upgrade:
1) Plugged in everything to Linksys box in same config as I had with my netgear router (2 wired LAN connections, 2 wireless, and Moto TA all on DHCP). This was with the initial firmware that came with router v. 2.02.7 (with no qos). Everything worked fine, my wife used both vonage lines all day with no probs.
2) Flashed firmware to HyperWRT v. 1.3 and set up qos based on MAC address for Moto box and physical LAN port. No dial tone, Moto box consistently had 4 blinking lights. Multiple reboots of entire system (cable modem, router, TA), same story. Otherwise, router still working fine (solid connections on rest of wired and wireless LAN).
3) Turned off qos, same story as in 2) above.
4) Flashed firmware to latest Linksys release (v. 2.04.4), same result as in 2) above.
5) Reconnected old Netgear router, Vonage working fine again.
6) Flashed Linksys firmware back to original 2.02.7 that I received it with, and the Vonage box is working once again.
Am I missing something obvious here?? Do I need to set up port forwarding or something with the latest release of the Linksys firmware? I have not previously had to bother with this. Does it have to do with more robust firewall settings in the lastest release (I saw there were more options in 2.04.4 verus 2.02.7)?
Thanks in advance for any advice--I was really looking forward to implementing the qos, but currently it has induced only frustration and profanity...
cheers, dave
P.S. Moto TA is _behind_ router. |

 | reply to fitzu428 Does anyone know if the WRT54G QOS works in the inbound (download) direction? Reading the WRT54G manual and specs doesn't specifically say if it supports both inbound and outbound QOS. My firewall works great for the outbound QOS, but doesn't seem to do anything for inbound. So my callers can hear me fine, but I get very choppy sound when the network is busy. Would the WRT54G fix this? |

 | reply to fitzu428 Thanks all for advice about upgrading the Moto firmware. Works like a charm now!
My (relatively limited) understanding is that the Linksys firmware supports only upload QOS. I believe that the Sveasoft firmware will do both up and down qos.

| Routers like the WRT54G can only control QOS on outbound data packets. Your ISP controls how it sends incoming data packets to your router. In the future, there should be a protocol developed that will enable your ISP and your router to communicate in order to coordinate QOS in both directions. However, for now, QOS is a one way street and that's for outbound (or uploading data packets) only.
QOS for outbound only is helpful since most people have limited outbound speeds and very high download speeds. For example, I have 4000/356 on my cable. So my QOS router can control the QOS for the 356 which helps a great deal. It can do nothing for the 4000 down load but since that is so large anyway, most of the time things work fine.
Most people with a good broadband connection with download choppiness have problems with having a poorly run ISP who is either overloaded with customers on their DSL or cable nodes. |

 | reply to fitzu428 Actually there are two methods to control incoming packets. One is to change the TCP/IP advertisement window to get the other side to slow down and the second is to drop packets of lower priority services when data comes in too fast.
The Sveasoft Alchemy firmware has both of these. |

Krak2 join:2004-08-05 New Brunswick, NJ | reply to fitzu428 the problem with the WRT54G is that on that latest firmware release the router is doing SPI, and seeing SIP messages as 'bad' it is a problem on linksys's side and unfortunatley the only thing you can do is roll back the router or call vonage and have them upgrade the firmware for you. |
