[DSL] What's the cheapest way to keep aol for email only

Hello everyone. My friend has AOL dialup. (before you say this is in the wrong section please read the rest) He and his family really want to move to broadband(not AOL broadband). The only problem is that his dad has a very publicised "@AOL.com" email. The only reason they need to keep AOL is for his dad's email address. So I was wondering what's the cheapest way to do this. I was thinking they could get a pay by the hour plan and just use IMAP or AOL.com to get their email and never dial up. Would that work? I there a better way?

Thank you very much,
Andy

AOL used to have a basic plan that was designed solely to keep your AOL screen names. That was $2.95 or $3.95 a month, with no dialup time included. You had to go to aol.com to check your e-mails. That sounds like what you have in mind.

However, I understand that plan was discontinued. The cheapest one I know of now is $4.95 a month which includes three hours of dial-up connection. That would not be bad as a backup dialup service for when your broadband is down. You would go via broadband to aol.com to check your e-mail, or to write outgoing e-mail.

My sister uses it as her main service, since she is rarely online for more than three hours a month. Over three hours it would be $2.95 per hour, which is not bad since they only charge for actual time. Thus three separate 20-minute session would count as one hour.

Re: [DSL] What's the cheapest way to keep aol for

Thanks, I tell him that.

On the website I see this about the light usage plan:
quote:
Warning! This plan is not recommended for current AOL Broadband with DSL members. Online DSL usage will be billed at $2.95/hour under this plan and may result in exceptionally high bills.
That just means when they're actually signed on in aol they'll get charged, right? So if I uninstall the aol software that can't happen, right?

IMAP access shows up in the Detailed Bill, but last time I checked you were not actually charged for it. But I am very wary of that changing. Keep a close eye on that Detailed Bill.

What about checking email online at aol.com? Thats free right?

Also if he signs on to AIM (using trillian) it won't count towards the bill right?

Thanks for all your help.

I believe you're correct on both points, but it's one of those things that's hard to verify without actually having an hourly account. So keep checking that detailed billing.

I did the aol chat thing from their website and it all looks good.
Here's the whole chat:

Natalie has joined this session!
Natalie says, Hi! Welcome to Registration Assistance. My name is Natalie. AOL 9.0 Optimized with "Top Speed Technology" is great! Signing up with me is secure, safe and easy! You'll get 50 days of unlimited usage! That's 50 full days! Let's start today! ok?
You say, My friend has AOL dialup. He's going to switch to DSL from a different provider. He'd like to keep his email address because it is highly publisiced. What is the cheapest way of doing this? The only way I know of is to get the light usage plan for $4
You say, hold on
You say, that didnt copy and paste right
Natalie says, We have two different price plans. The first is $24.95 for unlimited high speed connection and unlimited dial-up
. The second plan is $14.95 for unlimited high speed and 5 hours dial up.
You say, do u have the light usage plan for 4.95
Natalie says, Yep, it's for 3 hours of usage a month.
You say, ok
You say, hold on a sec
Natalie says, ok
You say, my friend will be switching to dsl
You say, from SBC
You say, I have two more questions. 1 does using IMAP to check his email cost anything extra and 2, Does signing on to AIM
(not using the aol software) count toward the 3 hours of connection time.
Natalie says, Your friend can sign on to their AOL account and visit Keyword: Billing and change the price plan themselves.
So they do not need to wait on hold.
You say, ok
You say, but if he uses his new dsl connection and gets his mail using IMAP does that count toward the 3 hours
Natalie says, Neither of them cost extra.
You say, so signing on to aim doesnt count toward the 3 hours
Natalie says, No it will be not part of the 3 hours.
You say, and IMAP is free too right
Natalie says, Yea
You say, ok thats all
You say, thank you very much
Natalie says, You are very welcome have a good night.
