| [wired] Recap: BEFSX41 Stable Firmware
I guess I was just bored of providing two links for the most stable BEFSX41 firmware. That is why I decided to start this thread linking both 1.45.7 and 1.51.00. In my mind, these two firmware are the most stable firmware currently available for the BEFSX41. Firmware 1.45.7 is using the old style GUI and is the most stable of the two. However, 1.51.00 has neat little new features and is using the new style GUI. In my mind, you shall pick in between those two firmware. Both of them are considered beta material but are much better than the one provided at Linksys web site.
BEFSX41 Firmware 1.45.7 BEFSX41 Firmware 1.51.00
From now on, I will keep on using this thread to refer to the most stable firmware. That is of course until a new firmware is being made available for this router . And please do not post problems if you are using firmware 1.50.18 as we all know that this version is crap even though it has been the official release from Linksys web site for a while now . |

| Please note the following details:
First, WE (at BBR/DSLR) ARE the only fellows outside Linksys using BEFSX41 firmware 1.45.7. I find it hard to believe that an official organization would do any testing on beta material that you can not even find on Linksys web site.
Secondly, note that all the firmware version mentioned in there are 1.45.7 independently of which router model it is running on. Since when is Linksys sharp enough to use the same version across different model? It never happened on so many broaden range of models. Remember that BEFSX41 firmware 1.45.7 is way different than BEFSR41 firmware 1.45.7 (and please don't try to flash the wrong firmware on the wrong model). Quick observation, you can find BEFSR41 firmware 1.45.7 on Linksys web site. In other words, I think there is a typo in the article you have posted.
Finally, my Linksys contact has told me few months ago that this vulnerability is present in firmware 1.45.3 but is apparently fixed in 1.45.7. This still has to be confirmed but given the above two observation, it seems that the probabilities are good . |

I upgraded my BEFSX41 to 1.51.00 and encountered this situation which may be causing my VPN not to connect.
From the Security tab click on VPN and configure the settings. So far so good. Click on Advanced Settings and set the Proposal 1 to 3DES and other settings accordingly.
Save settings then view Advanced Settings again only to see encryption re-set to DES.
The BEFSX41 is trying to establish a tunnel with another Linksys (AG041) but doesn't even continue negotiating after the first MMI1 request is sent from my BEFSX41.
Is the re-setting of the encryption something only I'm suffering from?

| Your problem seems to be related to firmware migration. When you upgrade from a 1.4x.x firmware to a 1.5x.x firmware, it is VERY IMPORTANT that you restore the router configuration to factory defaults. This will remove any firmware incompatibility issues. There are other users that were having the same problem as you and it went away after restoring to factory defaults. |

To my knowledge, there has been NO V1.45.7 for BEFSRU31 -- Looking for 1939 Indian Motocycle |

If you change the IP address of the router from the default 192.168.1.1 address, the chances of getting struck by this vulnerability are very minute. Basically this vulnerability requires access to your local network or for you to click on a nasty link from an attacker that knows your router's local IP address. |

| reply to Flogator I want to know if I can go back to the version I had when I bought the router. If I'm not mistaking, it was version 1.45.7 or maybe .3. The reason why I want to do this is because I haven't been able to find a solution to fix the UPnP and the gaming problems. When I enabled the UPnP service and function in the version 1.45.7, I could play games like age of empires 2 without a problem. And this, with the two comps I have. Now, with the new version 1.50.18, I can't connect and play a game with even one computer. The new firmware produces a bug. When you connect to other PCs you won't be able to see all the players and the players you can't see will have a ping of 30. When that occurs the host can't launch the game because you can't see all the players and you get booted off.
It seems this version is stable yet it's giving me problems the previous version wasn't giving me. I don't know how to fix this. If there is a way to fix this problem and it can apply to all the computers I have, I'll stay with this version.
Can you degrade an upgraded firmware ??? if not; and there is no way to solve the problem how can I set the previous version back ? |

| reply to Flogator I tried the new firmware 1.51 and I have few problems with it. If I play AoE II the ports will be forward automatically but I still get the ping 30 problem. Also my router resets from time to time. It's less frequent then the 1.50.18 version but still happens. I also tried the firmware version 1.45.7 and for the gaming I have the same problems. So I went back to the 1.45.3 and everything is cool now. I can play normally, my router doesn't resets for no reasons.
The only thing I'm sad about is the NAT option. If I could disable the NAT in the 1.45.3 it would be perfect. but I cant so, some of my dl's will suffer. |

@optonline.net | reply to Flogator Why is the 15100-1 firmware 1892KB in size when all others are only approx 380KB?
Also the privatly hosted copy of 1457 you linked to is 1567KB in size, but all official versions are only 384KB?
4 times larger in size? |

| reply to Forn Since someone asked for it, here are the binary file sizes of these firmware .
BEFSX41 firmware 1.45.7: .bin file is 1604608 bytes (1567KB) .zip file is 438175 bytes (428KB)
BEFSX51 firmware 1.51.00: .bin file is 1937408 bytes (1892KB) .zip file is 453301 bytes (443KB)
For sake of comparison, see BEFSX41 firmware 1.50.18: .bin file is 1937408 bytes (1892KB) - same as 1.51.00 .zip file is 454406 bytes (444KB) - but include release note text file |

| Forn, let's compare orange with orange and apple with apple. From your screen shot, the upper dialog refers to the BEFSX41 router where as the lower dialog refers to the BEFSR41. These two devices ARE NOT the same. It just happened that Linksys released a firmware with the same version number for these two appliances. However there are no relationships what so ever between BEFSX41 firmware 1.45.7 and BEFSR41 firmware 1.45.7. For last but not least, BEFSX41 firmware 1.45.7 has never been released officially by Linksys. You will actually not find it on any of their public web sites. Only a few BEFSX41 users were handed out this firmware. It just happen that I was one of them and I decided to share it with other BEFSX41 users given the proper permission from my Linksys contact.
We live in a free society. As such, you have the freedom of listening to experienced users and take advantage of their knowledge to save you time and struggles. On the other hand, you also have that same freedom to use Linksys crappy official firmware and have a hard time to get the router to work the way you want, spend hours of debugging, spend hours over the phone with Linksys technical support while still can't figure out what's wrong. That's all a matter of choice. Happy debugging . |

@bellsouth.ne
| reply to Flogator Interesting thread.
A couple of days ago I purchased a BEFSX41 to replace an aging Asante router. The Linksys couldn't seem to make a stable PPPoE connection to my ISP (BellSouth DSL 3MB/s down 384kB/s up). I tried repeatedly. The Asante 3004 was reliable and fast. A direct connection from a Mac PowerBook was reliable and fast. The Linksys, configured same as the Asante and even using (or not using) the same MAC address was from unreliable to unusable and slow when web pages did download. Of course, between changing these out I completely broke the link with the ISP so everything came up from scratch. Very odd. Are there any known firmware or compatibility issues with this device and PPPoE, or specifically with BellSouth?
Thanks... |
