| NAV 2005 Problem - Help Please!
Hello,
I purchased the upgrade (download version) to NAV 2005. I have the exact problem as explained below. I "stole" this text from a newsgroup forum that was written by someone calling themself "SgtRich". I get the error message everytime I boot.
There have not yet been any replies to his post yet and I was hoping I might have better luck here.
Thanks in advance!

I upgraded from NAV 2004 to NAV 2005. Per the instructions, I installed NAV 2005 and everything went fine. Following install, I rebooted, as requested by NAV 2005. NAV received latest updates, configured itself and ran a full system scan. Everything worked fine.
Tonight, I turned on the computer and received an error message on startup. First there was a message stating, "Installation proceeding...". then an error message appeared on top of that: "Norton AntiVirus 2005 does not use the Repair feature. Uninstall and then reinstall the program."
I did that and all went as it did the first time. Everything was fine. After rebooting a second time after re-running the updates, full system scan, etc., I received the same error message, that I needed to uninstall and reinstall the program.
Can anyone help me with this message? Again, NAV 2005 APPEARS to be working just fine. ZoneAlarm Pro and Windows XP SP2 Security Center both report that NAV 2005 is installed, updated and that Auto-Protect is enabled. |

| reply to Kujo5 No, I have not reported it yet. I was hoping to find a quick fix from someone here first...
It is not beta, it is an official release. I believe it is also now available in stores, but who needs a real cd, download purchase is just fine with me.
Thanks,

@shawcable.net | reply to Kujo5 I too have the exact same problem with NAV 2005. I talked to Symantec's sh***y tech support and they said it's an incompatibility with SP2 for XP. They are working on it supposedly. |

| I have XP Pro and upgraded to SP2 about three weeks ago. Last week, I ordered and received NAV 2005. I had NAV 2003 installed as part of Norton System works 2003 (Note; I only installed the NAV part--none of the rest of the programs as they caused problems and were outdated. So after a reformat I installed only NAV 2003.)
I have had NO problems runing the program except for the last download of definitons. I got some erros during the process, so I went to the Symantec site and manually downloaded the files and installed them and then ran live update again. IT showed the two files but this time they download and installed OK. This definiton problem is the ONLY glitch I have had. I have run many scans to test program, let it runs its' scheduled scans, etc. with NO problems: It scans e-mail works great with Zone Alarm 1.51. (pro version) And again, as I stated, I have SP2.
When I received NAV 2005 I uninstalled all the Symantec and Noron progams listed in Control Panel--Add Remove Programs, rebooted. I then deleled the Norton related folders and files in Program Files (some were left over), and again rebooted) and then installed Nave 2005.
You should show three Norton Symantec programs now in Add-Remove: Live Update, Live reg, and Nav 2005. Carefully go through the list and see if by chance on YOUR system there are any other Symantec or Norton related files. If there are any remove them and the three mentioned here; reboot. Them remove any Norton folders or files in the Program Files Folder: There should be two folders: Norton AntiVirus and Symantec. Delete them and once again reboot.
Now reinstall Nav 2005 again--be sure to disable and turn off ANY running programs, especially any that have icons in the system tray. Update defintions, run the first scan, stc. Then reboot and scan again, etc to test.Run several different types of scans to throughly test the program.
If you still get error: 1. You may have some corruption in the install program, if you downloaded it. If so, try to download a new version (you may have to call tech support. I think you have this option for a while at least after purchasing.
If not get tech support to send you a CD overnight.
2. Some other program is causing a problem during the install. Turn off Zone Alarm, or any firewall (disconnect from Internet if that is the only protection) and any other resident programs that you can turn off and reinstall Nav 2005 again. 3. If it is not related to install interference there could be a proble with some program that is resident or active when you are scanning with Nav. Try to disable any such programs especially any that have icons in the system tray.
Hope some of this helps. please keep us posted and let us know if the program is fixed and how. |

| Re nav problems and installing from CD
With a program as imortant as Anti-virus I would not want to juist trust a download installer, I would want a CD OR the ability to at least re-download the installer ( As you can do with Zone Alarm) If you buy NAV 2005 on the download option, I think you have the option of buying some download protect so you can re-download the installer in case you loose the original in a crash etc.
I would strongly advise that anyone going the download route get the assurance of being able to re-download and install |

You know it seems every time symantec comes out with a new product it has these types of issues. NAV 2004 also had the same issues where you get an error message saying to reinstall or some other bs, I finally resolved my issues going back to 2003. I am quite dissapointed in them with there products. I am hesitating going to NAV 2005 for the same reason of issues that you are having. Good luck. |

I always burn downloaded programs to CD as a backup in case I need to re-install them later. I believe Symantec/Norton saves the install files (at least they used to) to a folder called VBox\Installers. -- "I could be wrong, now... but I don't think so! - Adrian Monk |

I to save a backup of installers, but the pont was if the installer itself is corrupted or has problems so will the backup. You need the ability to get a fresh copy! |

Thanks for the help but I already went through all that and still have the same problems. If I revert back to NAV 2004 everything is fine but once I switch to NAV 2005 i get the same problem after a couple of reboots. Symantec said it's an incompatibility between NAV 2005 and XP SP2 but I doubt that because I did a clean install of windows and then installed NAV 2005 with the exact same issue popping up. I installed from a retail CD. |

I have reverted back to NAV 2004 and everything is fine... I was hoping that the download version that I have was the problem and that maybe the retail disk would fix the problem, but I guess you just demonstrated that that is not the case.
Ugh. |

| reply to Jer74 So, you clean installed windows and then NAV2005
and still had the problem? Did you install any other software? Did you have a firewall at least ON? Did you go to windows update and download and update all the patches (WITH A FIREWALL ON) and then install and run NAV 2005 (All the time keeping a firewall on or beeing behind a router).
If you did NOT do at least the above, you could have gooten infected in seconds after connecting to the intenret and that could have caused problems with your install or later tunning AV2005. Many viruses and worms mess with the AV software.
If you were protected by a router and/or a firewall and then still had the problems, and DID NOT have any other software installed except NAV 2005 and Widows then something is wrong with the install CD--get another one from Symantec |

| Re: So, you clean installed windows and then NAV20
SATA,
I am behind a router and the latest version of ZoneAlarm... I also practice safe HEX as some others around these forums like to put it. I have just about a zero chance that my machine is infected with a virus.
This problem is real. There is some combination that both Jer74 and I (and others on the net) have that allow for this problem to show.
I am running Windows XP Pro with SP2... Always have the latest patches from M$...
Oh well... |

| uninstalling NAV some thoughts.
I went to symantec's web site and under support searched on some thing related to Nav 2005. I found a description for uninstalling that included even deleting the sharded Symantec Folder in Program Files > Common files.
I did not do this when I uninstalled, but it might be necessary in some circumstances. Sounds like you are well protected and know what you are doing, but you might want to fing the instuctions at Symantec...just trying to help |

I disconnected from the internet, then did a clean install of windows, then installed NAV 2005. After a couple of reboots still had the same problem (I'm not the only one). This was all done while disconnected from the internet. |

Symantec's tech support took me through that step that you described but still doesn't help. |
