[OT] Anyone have SBC satellite TV here?

How has it been for you? I'm thinking of getting it.

I switched from Telemedia to SBC Dish and have not looked back.
I get a bundled deal with them for my phone, cell, dish, and my DSL....all for around 150. I pay 44.95 for 180 channels with Dish and was paying around 65.00 for cable.

I think Directv is better than Dish. Plus Directv has Yes. I pay $55 including tax for 2 tv's each with their own 2 tuner Tivo.

I've had Directv since I moved into my new house 6 years ago. Can't beat the price. I only pay $35.00 per month. Cable can't even come close to that.

Our bill is a bit over $70 a month. We get the top 180, superstations, east and west coast feeds (NY and LA). Our home has 3 receivers, so about $10 of that is the $5 per receiver fee.

If SBC starts to offer a combined billing 20% discount on Dish, please post about it here... 20% off would be nice

Question for satellite tv people. Is it possible yet to get both CT and NY local channels? For example, could I get both channel 13 and CPTV (PBS), New York and CT network stations, plus channel 61 Hartford and channel 11 NY?

They didn't add CT until spot beam came along, and I am grandfathered with east and west coast feeds... I'm concerned that seeking to get the CT stations, I'd wind up losing my west coast feed. As best I understand it, Fairfield County CT gets the NY feeds.

My Dad has Pegasus Direct TV. He can't get CBS CT no how, no way.

As you probably know, SBC Home Entertainment and EchoStar Satellite L.L.C [aka Dish Network] won't post on their website which local stations they offer. The key phrase they use is "where available."

Availability of local stations via satellite used to be based upon geography. Theoretically, if you could receive the local network affiliate's broadcast signal with a conventional antenna, then you were not permitted to receive that same broadcast signal via satellite. I've read too that availability of local programming can be dependent upon negotiations between local providers and satellite entities*. Apparently the local broadcast commercial content is not rebroadcast by the satellite operators? (*i.e. - it's always about who is getting paid in these deals )

Sounds like a question to ask is "What local stations do I get".

I thought I saw on one of them, Direct or Dish, you put in your ZIP code and it spit back what local stations you would get.

I'm betting the answer from SBC sales will sound like something Billy Bob Clinton composed.

It used to be that you would write a letter to the local affiliate begging and pleading for the broadcast channel. The local station would write back with a yay or nay letter. If yay, you would forward this letter of permission to your satellite provider, and voila! The local station would appear in your satellite channel lineup.

A buddy of mine took his nay letter, high-res color copied it onto some nice linen paper, then kind of, uh, re-wrote the letter into a yay. Damned if it didn't work. He's a bad man.

and no, it wasn't me

I'll have to ask about the local channel line up. They didn't elaborate on it when i first asked. But the price seems right. I pay 80.00 now for 180 channels with Adelphia. Humm 45 with sbc i think. No brainier for me.. heck i may even get a cell phone. 23.95 and 250 free min anywhere

Careful, superstations are extra, also there is a $5 per extra receiver (after the 1st) charge. You cannot just string multiple TV's or cable boxes up off the primary receiver (though some receivers permit reception of 2 concurrent feeds). For PVR models over 508 (510 and up) you also pay a $5 monthly PVR fee.

All in all, it sounds like a pretty good deal. Another thing to be careful about is that Cingular has in the past offered cell plans that incur roaming charges everywhere outside of CT. The Cingular CT "home area" is/was limited to the former Lynx tower group, that extends from roughly New Haven to Pittsfield, MA. The "home area" plan's first bill was best washed down with a glass or three of some fine single malt scotch.

You need to apply for a waiver(through DirecTV), since you're able to get your locals. it's up to your local channels, i.e. WFSB(CBS), WTNH(ABC), etc... to let you get the NY & LA feeds, not DTV or DishTV. I'll tell you this, you'll get denied ABC & CBS, and more than likely get NBC & Fox. Plus it's around 2.50 per month per channel to get these feeds. I got denied ABC & CBS repeatedly, and got the other 2 on my first request. You cannot circumvent the waiver process. this is all done in accordance with federal legislation. good luck. PM me if you have any questions.

The "local" Cingular area is now all of New England, NY, NJ and part of PA. It might include more, but I don't remember.

Actually you can, some (like myself) are grandfathered in. I have all east and west coast network feeds for NY and LA, never needed to file any waiver form. I think there is a rule about people who had service before mid 1999. However, it does leave me stuck with Dishnet, if I cancel or lose service, I lose my west coast feeds

Well I knew I would incur roaming charges if I left the state. I would swith to a different plan if I planned to roam. The plan I have suits my needs very well even though
I do not have free roaming. I have no contract and the 31.95 for 600 anytime minutes which roll over and my 5,000 nights and weekends is plenty of time for me.

The satellite picture & sound is far superior to cable. I asked my cable company why channels X, Y, & Z are fuzzy. Their answer: "It's system wide." Geez - that makes me feel better.

I saw an ad yesterday from a local Dish network satellite installer promising all local CT channels. I've heard the availability of local channels tends to shift back & forth from time to time. If anyone here is blocked out of local channels, perhaps now is the time to grab them? I'm guessing, and don't know for sure.
