| Actiontec 701 - Official List of Issues
I would like to centrally collect the common issues that new and seasoned members are experiencing with the Actiontec 701 devices distributed by Qwest.
As the list develops in this thread, I would like frequent forum members to volunteer and contribute solutions to the problems for addition to the forum FAQ. As members new to the Actiontec start asking questions we've answered a million times we can point them to the FAQ.
I hope this gives us more time to continue to debate the evils of interleaving, FEC errors, port blocking and cable. (just kidding about cable) -- My other passion is mountain biking. Info on the Colorado based Front Range Mountain Bike Patrol - FRMBP can be found at:»frmbp.homeip.net |

| I am having one problem.
It seems, that even if I don't set up port forwarding, and I open up a bit torrent client, such as Azureus, Azureus will connect with a HIGH ID and all ports will be accessible.
This is nice, in that I don't have to configure the Actiontec 701 at all, but what if I DON'T want people to have access to any old port they choose to????
This seems like a major security flaw unless I am missing something. |

| reply to adsldude I just want to remind everyone that before you post your issues with the GT701, make sure you're running the latest firmware for the modem. Currently it is 5.5 and can be downloaded here:
After upgrading to the lastest firmware, check to see if you're still expierencing the same issue as before.
For more information about this modem and other Qwest modems you can visit this site:

| I highly and enthusiastically recommend www.spazmatic.net to anyone who has a Qwest DSL line.
Very informative, very easy to use.

| reply to adsldude If I were compiling a list of issues on this subject it would include the abominable tech support provided by Actiontec. Ive been fighting to get any kind of VPN connectivity for 2 weeks now and Actiontec support (and I use the term loosely) isnt just unhelpful, its downright laughable. For instance, they had me deleted the ports on the basic port forwarding screen and had me enter the same ports, etc. on the advanced screen. Give me a break.
If Qwest is going to tout a spirit of service they would do well to outsource to a vendor that can supply a modicum of value to end users. |

@qwest.net | reply to adsldude To the list, don't forget to add the DNS 1.0.0.0 problem.
For me, oddly, it has only manifested with "www" hostnames. In other words, I get 1.0.0.0 for "www.bob.com" but I get a good IP for bob.com. |

| reply to adsldude I used to have very frequent DNS 1.0.0.0 problems. For me at least, the solution was to put the ISP DNS host IP addresses in the NIC IP settings (static DNS) on the computer to which the Actiontec is connected via ethernet. If the DNS info is left as dynamic, I am guaranteed to see frequent 1.0.0.0 errors. Qwest DSL support was no help in figuring this out. They had never heard of the 1.0.0.0 problem. |

| reply to adsldude I have an issue with modem lockup/reboot when two computers on my network use different VPN client software at the same time to connect to different networks - In particular the Sonicwall and Nortel VPN clients.
Actiontec support is useless. Is anyone having success using a different modem that is compatible with Qwest's dsl service? |

I VPN all the time to different clients at the same time with a 701 with no issues. |

@qwest.net
| reply to adsldude That's true, you can bypass the Craptiontec's DNS and wholly avoid the problem.
Thing is, you shouldn't have to do these gyrations. My Arescom that I used happily for 3 years never had this problem: it happily gave out good DHCP info all the time.
It's appalling that Qwest is using this POS: I wouldn't take one for free, left to my own devices. I've worked in netowkring for 10 years and this is most pathetic excuse for network hardware I've ever seen. |

| ok... you are calling the actiontec a pos while singing the praises of the Arescom? I don't know what kind of 'netowkring' you worked in but the actiontec is heads and shoulders above the arescom if the firmware is properly upgraded. -- Positive Affirmation Of Creative Destruction |

| reply to adsldude Yeah
. I saw the typo too late, ah well.
I've worked with LANs, WANs, Cisco, NorthernTelecom, for 10 years and this is the most appalling piece of networking hardware I've set hands on.
In one month with the Actiontec I've had worlds away more problems than I ever did with the Arescom. The Arescom just worked. This one just doesn't work: nothing you can do will fix it.
The Actiontec is fully updated on firmware and I constantly get the DNS 1.0.0.0 resolution problem. Some days I have to reset the Actiontec 3 times because of this.
The best part is that the problem appears to be known (you can find several references to it on boards like this) and have been known for sometime, but nothing is being done to remedy it. |

@qwest.net | reply to adsldude Did the DNS problem appear with older versions of the firmware too?
I sadly had to get around it by adding a prepend of the Qwest DNS server in my dhclient.conf on FreeBSD....:S |

Now this, my friend, is great advice. I've been hunting the source of this bug off and on for a couple of months. Thanks. |

@teldta.com | reply to I hate Actiontec Sounds like a similar issue I had with two NICs on at the same time. Wireless and Wire. Why don't you hard code the DNS and test it. |
