Comcast did, local market ignored them and went straight for the money.

What's sad is that Comcast should have anticipated this situation, given that it is a college-town.. and didn't. Even worse, what if they did and didn't do anything about it?

lol... can't wait until the speed upgrade... I expect the entire system will burst into flames.
See this only goes to add a another point against the network abusers who are hogging the bandwidth from the rest of you. Now let's see how long your connection holds....

They're putting fiber in Davis? What company is this? Quest?

Quest was tearing up the street right in front of my apartment again on Friday. If I recall correctly Quest has tore up the street three times in the same place since they first put the fiber in over the summer.

Has anyone noticed a significant improvement in their connection speed? ~4 days ago, my connection seems much more reliable.

Yes, that's mostly correct. However it has nothing to do with what they are using, but how it is set up. The problem is, they didn't have enough bandwidth to begin with. They got more subscribers then they expected, and the subscribers on average use more bandwidth. The problem they had is rather then saying NO to new subscribers (and adjusting the network infrastructure to hold more, like Comcast Corporate told them to) they said sure more money for the local franchise and added far too many new subs far too fast without the network to back it up. After all of this, they then found out that their network no longer works worth a dime (not to much surprise) as they've oversold the CMTS and available bandwidth (Just like Corporate told them not to do). This is a repeating issue in the California market as it happened with Sunnyvale just a few months before. The problem is it is easier to fix the problem before it happens then take peoples money and attempt to fix the issue after.

my connection seems to be down (despite sync) today (it's 2:15p now, seems to have started a little while ago). Anyone else?

edit: erm.. nevermind... no sync either.

You may know the Cisco uBR10012, but Comcast does not deploy these. Only VXR7246, Arris Cadants, and now the Motorola BSR. Knowing the size of the Davis area, it is either fed by a Cisco 7246 locally, or served via fiber from Sacramento (then it would likely be on a Cadant or BSR). I think a major problem might be since Davis is a college town, the average bandwidth consumption per sub is much higher then a standard bedroom community. You need to plan on having less subs then normal on the CMTS then in a normal town this size, and plan for bigger egress pipes. College areas are know for using all the bandwidth you throw at them. I suspect they are scrambling to adjust.
