WFOPremium join:2001-08-27 San Ramon, CA 1 edit | Giant Anti-Spyware The results of the Anti-Spyware tests... »Anti-Spyware Tests (Round 1) earlier tonight peeked my interest in this program. I downloaded the 15 day trial. It's easy to set up and highly configurable. You can schedule your updates and your scans to run automatically.:) Ahem... Lavasoft? The scan was quick... about 2.5 minutes.
Pay attention during installation. The ask if you want to participate in the fight against spyware by sending anonymous information. The idea... by linking thousands of computers, they will get a jump on any new spyware variants. I opted out of that one.:p It looks like a keeper on first impressions. I'm guessing it will replace Spybot if not supplement it in the arsenal. Time will tell.

WFOPremium join:2001-08-27 San Ramon, CA | Another member, alerted me to a problem with the "Tracks Eraser" feature. Her computer froze and the application continued to consume memory. I ran "Tracks Eraser" on my computer. Giant was using 9 MB of RAM before I clicked to clear tracks. After I clicked the application hung and I watched my memory usage climb to 66 MB of Ram before killing the application. I emailed tech support and received this reply 2.5 hours later.

| reply to WFO I regularly run Adaware and Spybot but after this review I downloaded the trial version of Giant. I liked the configurable installation and it found several instances of spyware that Adaware and Spybot both missed. Not exactly a scientific test but better than most I've used. |

Used the trial program and on the first run had a couple of false positives and 1 problem with a file. Emailed support, got a reply in just over an hour for the first one and every reply after was received in a timely manner AND informative.
I'd say support was top notch, at least in my case. Giant is also interested in testers for the Enterprise edition due out later this year so if anyone runs a workgroup, or Windows 2000 or 2003 domain controller, and is interested in beta testing, shoot support an email. |

The above screen is all I get when clicking on any informational links within GIANT's program interface. Driving me nuts. Does anyone have a clue why IE will not assist in properly displaying these pages in GIANT? Please
Otherwise... Just installed the Trial version. Fairly impressed with overall feel and functionality. Only two other things caught my attention early on (one of which I reported to tech support):
1.) I dual boot WIN98SE/WINXP SP1. Giant immediately tagged IMGEDIT.OCX ver4.10.2000 (Kodak's Windows Imaging component)as the Backdoor.Hankydor trojan (Hank Panky) serious threat. This particular ActiveX component has been in place in my WIN98SE installation for a long time and not even TDS-3 finds anything wrong with the file. It may be true that IMGEDIT.OCX has been used in the exploit at one time or another(not sure) but this particular file on my hard drive IS clean. No big deal, false positives happen.
2.) For some reason I can not get GIANT to properly launch its built-in web links via IE. Each time I click on "View more details" on an item, I get a 404 white page (SEE ABOVE) with a vague reference to the s: home page. I reported this to technical support.
3.) I've had to Deactivate realtime monitoring of USER SHELL FOLDERS under System Agents because a.) there's no "Manage" option for this particular item and b.)despite specifically allowing a change to my RECENT folder (recent links are configured not to be retained/stored in my admin account), GIANT continues to popup with this alert one after the other. It will not remember that this "change" to a USER SHELL FOLDER, namely RECENT, is allowed! |

SparrowCrystal SkyPremium join:2002-12-03 Sachakhand | reply to WFO It seems the tech support is on the ball and right on the money. This one may be a keeper, and I am giving it another test run with the updated version which appears to have eliminated the Tracks Cleaning hang-up.
Now if the utility would remember my settings, and the request to ignore what Giant considers a "problem," it will get my vote. It is a bit pricey considering the annual renewal fee, but if it does what it is supposed to do and consistently, we'll have to pay the piper.

jmargel join:2001-03-07 Northumberland, PA | reply to WFO I am a network admin, and had a few machines giving me problems. Spybot & Adaware wouldn't fix it. Got a weird problem where the one user couldn't delete emails, it would hang his email program.
Running Giant, it found quite a few more spyware than the other two. His machine was pretty messed up. Ran it once, then booted in safe mode, ran it again, then rebooted. All works great now.
I purchased it, and very happy so far. I like how its proactive as well. The others just fix what is broken, this one tries to prevent it from happening in the first place. To me, spyware is more of a threat than viruses now. |

I mentioned in my previous post here in this forum about Giant in the anti-spyware test. It's a good well rounded program, but when I scanned it, it found some false positives, which adaware and spybot ignored.
Tech support is really good. I talked to them with live support within a few seconds of waiting.

Can somebody actually test this to see if this is true?

2kmaroThinkPremium,ExMod 1 BC join:2000-07-11 ColossalCave | reply to Beggar Su How sure were you that they were false positives?
I've purchased Giant AntiSpyware and am a bit impressed with it at this point. I'm running it on an AMD 3200+ system with 1GB RAM and it doesn't seem to give me any performance hit. Haven't delved deeply in to it (as how much memory its using, etc) but have just kind of been letting it sit there doing its thing.
After I installed it and scanned with it, it found 3 cookies I'd acquired. Things have stayed clean for the week or so I've been running it. This morning, after it had done the scan in the night, I found that someone had tried to sneak in a bunch of sites into my trusted zone as part of a hijack attempt. Wish I could remember all of the sites I visited last evening, I'd like to find out where that/those attempt(s) came from. Anyhow, Giant AS flagged them for quarantine, I elected to delete the registry entries.

No it is not a good read..it is a crap-on read for a guy who forgot K-9 project and what professional courtesy is still all about when you do test a trial version of a new product and how you then Help the developer who at many site has asked for input.

| reply to WFO When everyone is done testing, please make another, seperate post letting everyone who cannot test (due to having only one box) know if this is a keeper of a program and if the support is good, etc. A final addition sort of. It sounds as if this program has some merit, but in that I don't test programs, I wait for others to let me know if they really find a program worthy...especially one that is as costly. |

Andrew,
I've tried to understand your response several times, and have not been successful.
Are you trying to say that GiantAS personnel did not get Robin's comments? Or they were too busy to respond? Or that his comments didn't deserve a response?
Robin (the author of the GRC forum post) made, IMHO, three coherent and relevant observations.
What is the K-9 reference about?
Is GiantAS a trial version? I saw a few guesses to that effect in the GRC forum (another very long thread earlier), but no absolute statement.
Are you a GiantAS spokesperson? I suspect that folks who read this thread might be a little concerned about the product, if so. Your post could have been a little more coherent, and better written. And you could maybe take Robin's comments a little less personally.
You might want to address your feelings, or the issues themselves, in the GRC thread too. Everybody might benefit - right now, I see just a lot of "atta boy Robin" comments. |
