DSM-320 Reception

I got my dsm-320 about a month ago. Out of the box its' signal was very weak (about 10%-20%). Even when the router (DI-624 revC) was right next to it signal strength didn't top 80%. As a last resort I decided to crack open the little bugger. On the onboard wireless card i noticed 2 antenna jacks - a primary jack and an aux jack. Mine was on primary. Switched it to Aux and signal is a on the high 70's now (90%-100% when router is near).
p.s Warranty will probably be void if lid is taken off.

very, very interesting. I too have noticed the poor reception of this thing. Probably they've got the wrong settings in the firmware. Sad fact is they still haven't got round to testing this thing wireless in their labs.

I'm really keen on doing what you did, because no matter what I do with the router positioning, the DSM doesn't want to stabilize at anything higher than 14%.

However, I opened up the box, looked inside and got a little scared, so I'd be grateful if you were to guide me a bit.

This picture shows the inside of the box where the card is. Did you remove that thing with the transparent gummy stuff and plug it into the location where the arrow points?

If so, then 1) how did you remove the gummy stuff and 2) how did you get the connector to stay on the AUX jack without applying new gummy stuff?

I'm not at all concerned about my warranty, so please don't hesitate on advising me with that as a hold-back.

Thanks.

Well, removing the silicone (gummy stuff) was not difficult. you just have to jiggle the wire a bit. as far as i could see it's there as an isolator not as glue. so after jiggling it some it comes right off like a cap. the wire connecting the antenna is actually jacked, what i mean by jacked is that it's not just lying there on the connector but rather it has a kind of slot it slides into.
bottom line don't worry about it getting freed from the jack. just unplug it from main and replug into aux. it's a perfect fit!
p.s the pictures you sent are right on the money - those are the correct jacks.
enjoy

Thanks for the tip Guys.
My DSM was getting lowsy reception - typically only 20%.
Tested it right under the Wireless Access Point and it still only got up to 80%.
I made the change from Main Areial to Aux and it shot up to 100% while near the WAP and 80 - 100% in the other room.
;o)
Still doesn't play well but that'll be fixed in version 1.05 - I hope.

I was able to get my reception from lousy 10% to over 70% using this trick. Thanks.

How do you find the signal strength of the dsm-320?

JimRe

@coatsv01.pa.comcast.

If you select wireless from the menu, there is an option "Site survey". select that and you will see a list of the devices that it finds and the signal strength next ot it.

By the way, does anyone else have a problem when they turn off the device, it doesn't turn back on again?

I think it might be a heat related problem, but it is really annoying.

Hello there everyone. I did a BAD thing. While trynig to get the antenna lead off,I broke the connector off.

Does anyone have a good idea where to get a new antenna lead?

I am alright in the mean time, I am using a wired connection and may look at using an AP in client mode to go wireless.

But in case I want to use the wireless, I need a new antenna lead.

All suggestions and ideas apprecaited.

Thanks!

I just tried switching the antenna around (despite having no technical ability whatsoever) and not only was it fairly easy, but it worked! Signal strength is now around 70%, whereas it has been less than 25% before.

Now if only they'd fix the audio synch problem too!

I just got mine two days ago and I am not very impressed:
- Jerkey video playback.
- Incorrect aspect ratio for video playback.
- Bad wireless reception. Notebook at same location gets excellent reception.
- Unit hangs when turned on and requires mains unplug to get going again.
- No audio during Live365 playback.
- Unit plays video with sound and picture, then after some time shows error message that video format is unsopported. Unit is now unresponsive and requires mains unplug to get going again.

Any ideas on how to at least get Live365 working?

Btw, I submitted various D-Link web form tech support requests, no answer yet.

Lived through most of the stuff you mentioned:

»p214.ezboard.com/bdsm320

I would first look at the Mods/How to Fix the Wireless Problem:

»p214.ezboard.com/fdsm320frm14.sh···=2.topic

Also, make sure your firmware is at 1.05 and you have the latest server software as well.

GUYS PLEASE HELP ...
I received my new DSM 320. Installed Windows Media Connect on the computer. Configured the DSM and started listening to the MP3 files on my computer. Also saw some slide shows. Added some mpeg videos on the computer.
Ripped some dvd's on the hard drive, added that folder to the WMC but DSM would not display it. Bottom line, cannot view DVD's from my computer on the TV via DSM
WHY?

BTW, I am connected via ethernet and not wireless.
