 Actiontec Modem Question & carryover

Hi all,

Just a quick question.....I have a computer with a removable HD. I often swap HD depending on what I am working on. I have set up the modem to work with both HD, so no problem there. I am using an Actiontech GT701-WG modem, with WinXP pro on both HD. Thanks.

My question is...does the modem have any "carry over" ability, in that it can carry data/program/file etc. following a hd switch. I power down the computer to switch hd, but the modem is alway on. I am worried that some of my critical data can be "accidently" carried over from one hd to the next, simply via the modem carrying/holding over the data from switch to switch. My data is mission critical to my company, and so don't want any problems. Thanks for your help!

The only "sensative" data the modem carries is your logon account for the DSL signal to be sent to your designated place of residence.

Other then that, it carries nothing of significance that somebody could do something with.

Thanks IceWindius. I didn't ask in my oroginal post, but what about virus or trojan type files? Thanks.

Even if a virus some mangaged *though VERY unlikely* to tunnel into the units RAM, it would be erased the second the power was removed from the unit. All the software is on ROM memory, so viruses will have no effect on editing or changing anything

I appreciate your help, but by your last reply, you make it sound like the modem would need to power down. Being that it is an external modem, it does not power down. Does this make a difference? Thanks.

What I mean is detach the power to it. But the possiblity of a virus attacking a DSL modem is so remote and pointless. I honestly don't see any reason to worry about virus in regards to your modem

I have never heard of a virus or trojan that will infect a DSL modem. I would be very surprised if one existed.

actually, virus' can tunnel themselves into the flash memory of modems and kill your modem. It's the same flash memory that stores your username/password and modem configuration.

The Code Red virus caused a denial of service attack on the 678 modem, it did not however infect it. (The modem once affected was disabled, and not going off an infecting other modems or computers.)

Just like a DDOS attack on a website by a bunch of infected Windows computers does not infect the website, it just makes the website unavailable.

I still don't know of a virus that will spread by infecting a modem, which then infects something else. (And would still be surprised if something like that existed) Suffering, is this what you were thinking of, or where you thinking of a DOS attack on the modem?
