Re: [OT] anyone donate a car in CT? said by mcevoys: The IRS laws have changed on auto donations...check with your accountant first.
they have changed but don't actually go into effect till next year.
now you get full value deduction to true value of the car. next year you get actually what the car "sells" for as the deduction. so when you give to a charity you will have to wait for auction to get a deduction price. now you can blue book it - repair cost and other "true value" deductions -- www.stopfcc.comI do not think the government needs to restrict free speech especially on a device that has an off knob. |

Ah... But that's mostly flat ground except for the hill to the mall. Also, the bus has to make stops and you mostly do not have to.
I can make it from near Main Street in Manchester to Main Street in East Hartford in about 45 - 50 minutes.
I made it from the Webster Theatre in Hartford to my apartment here in Manchester in about an hour and a half (got a little bit lost getting to Main Street in Hartford. The streets of Hartford are not well-marked.
Of course it's mostly almost flat ground--I only LOOK stoopid! And I beat the bus because I won't let them pass--I swerve in front of them. (Hey! I like the sound of air brakes!). Mostly, it's almost a tie going TO the mall, but I don't have to wait around for a bus back.
Then the easiest grade into the mall starts with Home Depot's driveway from Buckland Road. Pavillion Drive is the nice way out--you can hit 30 mph easily without pedaling. Timing the light and line of cars for the left turn at the bottom is a bit tricky.
Of course you get lost in Hartford! In my spare time, I steal street signs. -- Life is a tragedy with intermittent comic relief. |

 | reply to CNZ I am 56 and in fairly good shape..playing tennis etc., but I am have to quit smoking. How long ago did you quit and how are you doing? I have heard horror stories about some folks never getting over the urge. I have been smoking for around 40yrs. At least I no longer pay U.S. prices for them...but that makes it easier TO smoke due to the low price. Sigh.......:) |

 | reply to P Ness I've donated cars to the American Cancer Society before. They come and pick it up. And for tax purposes, I got the value of the car from kelly's blue book online (»www.kbb.com). |

SchnookI Flatulate On Your Approximate Azimuth.Premium join:2004-04-12 4 edits | reply to Sky King I quit 25 Jan 2003, cold turkey from not quite 2 packs at that time. There had been times I was up to 3 packs of unfiltered Camels.
Yeah, I'd been buying online from the Seneca Indians. Tossed about 5 cartons in the garbage.
I wasn't even thinking about them 17 days later.
I'm up to "Sorry, don't smoke," if somebody wants to bum one; without a big story about having quit, yadayada. It's just not an issue.
Not quite matching my 25 years on the wagon, which is also not an issue any more.
I'm just no fun at all any more.
Now, the upside--35 years' worth of sinus trouble magically cleared up, I don't hack up gunk for 15 minutes in a steamy shower every morning, I don't snore any more.
And the first 5 miles on the bike, depending on the terrain and no headwind, I can pedal breathing through my nose only. Usually hum or whistle a tune while pedalling!

billh491 join:2001-08-09 Pomfret Center, CT | reply to P Ness The issue I have always wonder about is this. They take the title with your name on it and pass it on to who ever they sell it to. What if the end buyer slaps some old plates on it and drives around never getting it put in their name and something happens your name is still listed as the owner. I am sure in the long run your receipt from the charity will help explain it but who wants that hassle.
I know my neighbor bought a car left it in the driveway and worked on if for well over a year then donated like this. He just gave them the title that was still in the sellers name from two years ago! |

I tried the patch a year before cold turkey, but still lit up a booster as needed. Then came the day I could afford another carton, or another box of patches. Carton won. I was smoking more than before!

Not yet! When "...I think." doesn't appear in this sentence, then you're committed to quitting. As long as you put in the hedge, you're not going to do it.
It's the Yoda thing: do or not do, but there is no try. -- Life is a tragedy with intermittent comic relief. |
