Ah... But that's mostly flat ground except for the hill to the mall. Also, the bus has to make stops and you mostly do not have to.
I can make it from near Main Street in Manchester to Main Street in East Hartford in about 45 - 50 minutes.
I made it from the Webster Theatre in Hartford to my apartment here in Manchester in about an hour and a half (got a little bit lost getting to Main Street in Hartford. The streets of Hartford are not well-marked. -- "[They] watch the bonfire mark the end of the Madman/They all watch the bonfire die into embers/They all watch the funeral morning glow./The Madman is dead./The dawn wind whispers:/'The Madman is dead.'"--S.C.Schumacher, "The Madman of Hamberton Swabe"

Of course it's mostly almost flat ground--I only LOOK stoopid! And I beat the bus because I won't let them pass--I swerve in front of them. (Hey! I like the sound of air brakes!). Mostly, it's almost a tie going TO the mall, but I don't have to wait around for a bus back.
Then the easiest grade into the mall starts with Home Depot's driveway from Buckland Road. Pavillion Drive is the nice way out--you can hit 30 mph easily without pedaling. Timing the light and line of cars for the left turn at the bottom is a bit tricky.
Of course you get lost in Hartford! In my spare time, I steal street signs. -- Life is a tragedy with intermittent comic relief.
