Re: Speedstream 5100 cannot Access

Well if it's a 5100 Bridge (99% chance it is a Bridge), the proper IP is »10.0.0.1, not »10.10.10.1

Where did it come from??

OTE (Greek Telecom) sails them with a new ADSL connection. In my network i have a Cisco router, but this modem i buy it only for backup solution and because when OTE gives you ADSL and you don't buy one of his modem, after he refuse the support and all the times told you that all the problems are coming from the other modem you may use.

Any way... I tried and 10.0.0.1 but nothing...I have reset the modem ... but nothing. The factory IP of the modem is 192.168.254.254

Any other ideas?

Is that what your ISP is telling you?

The Factory IP of a Retail 5100 Bridge is 10.0.0.1 and you have to add it's MAC ID with an ARP entry after every boot to access it, since it does not have a DHCP server running and ARP is disabled by Efficient.

The Factory IP of the Retail 5100 Router is 192.168.254.254 and it gives you a DHCP assigned IP of 192.168.254.1 if you set your NIC to DHCP.

When you reset any 5100 and your PC does not get an IP of 192.168.254.1 you will have proven you do not have a Router version.

Since no DHCP server can be found when a 5100 Bridge starts, the computer (if Win 2000/XP and newer) will assign itself an IP Address in the Class B range of 169.254.0.0 with a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0. No gateway or DNS server will be assigned. This IP address range is owned by Microsoft and used for this purpose.

Older OSes (Win 95/Win 98) will display an error saying "This DHCP client was unable to obtain an IP network address from a DHCP server. Do you want to see future DHCP messages?" Yes/No are the two choices.

I've basically repeated (minus the hack trick using ARP manual entry for a Bridge) what Efficient says here:

Accessing the Web Management Interface on my SpeedStream 5100 or 5200

After 100 resets and still nothing, i forgot him open over 7 hours and just connected him to my second NIC. Sundely works...without touch anything on 192.168.254.254!!!

I dont know what to say!! Strange things...may be the setup wants more time ...
LOL

Thanks again for your Help!!

You are Welcome. Congratulations on your success.

Why did you forget to mention an important fact that your PC has Two (2) NICs?? It seems there is always a problem when a Window's PC has Two (2) NICs. A *Nix box doesn't exhibit the same problems as a Windows box does with multiple NICs.

Please, in the future, always state that you have more than one NIC.

I have tried and on other computers. Each time that i was testing the router(s) only one of my NICs is enable, i haven't face problems again. (but thanks for the advice that windows have problems with 2 or more NICs).

Thanks again.

Have a nice day!

The speed is normally controlled by the ISP. There isn't anything you can do on the modem to change that.

Basic answer to off-topic post: No, YOU cannot adjust the speed.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled question and answer period, concentrating on the original question.

The ip adddress of the modem is usually underneath the modem itself (mine is 192.168.0.1)

Really?? I take it you do not know that IP is only for SBC 5100b modems and NOTHING else??

Real 5100s use 192.168.254.254 and early (no longer available) 5100a that SBC first used have an IP of 10.0.0.1 and NONE of those have the IP address printed on the bottom. Then there is a odd 5100 that uses 192.168.1.1 so you have no way of telling what the IP is if you do not have a 5100b from SBC.
