Re: DSLi are spamming scumbags

I don't know where they got their addresses from.

It's weird, because I have 4 e-mail addresses. Two of them are @dsli.com, one is at my personal domain (hosted on their server), and the fourth is my work e-mail, which is hosted on my T1 at work (through DSLi).

The only address where I got the spam was on my work e-mail, which I haven't signed-up on any mailing lists.

This is very strange.

I was planning on passing by their office tomorrow, because I wanted to renew my domains, etc.

People, you all are making a big fuzz out of this. I did receive the email, yes, did once and that's it (voip). I've never had any problems with Dsli; and I'm sure (well, almost) that this was no spam. I haven't received any more spam from them or any other company to the email they have on file.
Hopefully the spam doesn't start coming...

I also have never had a problem with dsli. They are a great company. Mistakes happen and and they do get corrected as you can see you can not reply to offers anymore. Hopefully They will send out there mailing list better next time. I have had services with dsli for about 3 years and have never had a problem that was there problem.... Stop complaining about spam just delete it. And move on.

I never opted-in for a "mailing list" with whoever this DSLi company is, I have never looked for any VoIP solutions ever (doesn't interest me) and I have no business relationship with DSLi, not ever!! Your "Truly Anonymous" post from 209.xx.47.dsli.com holds very little water when you may well be the Spammer involved.

And there is no Opt-Out info. All points to a sleazy Spam Operation from the get go and I received way more than ONE of these Spams from your company. Stop defending a scummy spammer's actions about their spew of garbage and just format the server you sent it from (including the made up mailing list stored on it). And move on.

They are not spammers per se.

They did send out an e-mail blast, but the person that did it made the mistake of making the list into an address, and making that address the one where it came from.

Result: everyone that replies, replies to the entire group.

They're a legitimate company that tried to send an offer to their customers. How it got sent to several other people, I'm not sure.

But I do know that when you're a customer of any other company, be it AT&T Wireless, NetFlix, etc. you get e-mails from them with little offers that are presented as "updates" or "did you know."

1 edit
The last time I gave out my netcom address (that was just
spammed) was in January 2003 here at BBR during an ISP search. I've not used it since as I have no other replies to it's inbox. I sure hope that is wrong. Did BBR have data stolen/compromised from 2003?

So all this fuss is over a message you received on an e-mail account you don't even use anymore?

What does my frequency of use have to do with it? Nothing.

I pay for it, not anyone else. I rotate accounts every 2 years if you must know. That one is in the middle of a rotation and should be inactive until I start handing it out again. Is it not my prerogative to use my resources as I deem?

Just sounds like you're making a bigger deal out of it than was necessary.

Do you go insane with every single piece of spam you receive?

I just delete the ones that don't make it through the filter. Not a big deal. I sleep well at night.

Right. Good One. That is the reason Spam is accepted and not stopped right now. A few don't hurt, it's only one or two, the senders say. However it's like cockroaches and they multiply if you do not wipe them out when they first appear. The bottom line is I pay for my email resources, not the Spammers.

There seems to be some dynamics behind this Spam that people do not want brought to the light of day.

I still think it was a massive screw up. We're kind of bitey at spam though... I almost expected this.

We were never compromised as a site.

MadDog, if you were talking about something that happened in 1996 I might agree with you. Spam has been a huge problem since 1997 at the latest. I forget the exact date of "Cyber Promotions vs. AOL". Any company that doesn't get it by now is dangerous and needs to be immediately removed from the public internet.

As for where they got their addresses, there are 3 possibilities for my info. One, they illegally scraped whois data and guessed a probable username at my domain. Two, they scraped data from the address books of one of the tow dozen or so people that I trusted with that address. Three, my web hosting company sold the list of valid addresses. Given that only one domain was hit, I'm guessing it wasn't the last one. I'm also pretty sure it wasn't the second. The scraping of the whois data is almost certainly the answer.

You're damn right I do. Spam is THEFT. I pay for my bandwidth. I never gave these assholes permission to use it. They didn't even bother to comply with the CAN-SPAM law that is ridiculously easy to follow. So, it's also ILLEGAL.

But since you seem to be ok with theft, why don't you give me your address so I can come over and take your computer off your hands.

How can you compare "stealing bandwidth" to stealing a computer (larceny)?

I would consider people using someone else's open WiFi network to be bandwidth thieves.

Can you please show me exactly how much this piece of spam cost you? If it was theft, please quantify it in terms of a dollar amount.

Very Easily Answered!!

My response to that would be what the RIAA tells (when suing) people for one copy of their music when a single digital copy is stolen (a single track). How much was that figure they use again?

But the RIAA isn't suing for bandwidth theft. They are suing people for copyright infringement. That's an actual crime, they just don't have an identity. Either way, you can use the price of a CD, or maybe take the CD price, divide by the number of tracks, etc.

Point is, you still haven't answered my question.

Also, it's just like when you get junk mail at home. It's there with your normal mail, and you throw it in the garbage (or recycle it). Do you place a dollar amount on junk snail mail?

Trash mail (snail mail spam) costs the sender and emailed Spam costs the recipient (and the ISP also, so the ISP raises my prices to cover their higher costs to handle the incoming Spam). You, especially you, should be very aware of this business fact since you work[ed] for an ISP. You should be ashamed for defending any Spam.

Now if you want to pay my monthly DSL costs, I let you Spam my (really yours when you pay for it) email inbox. Otherwise no-one has the right to send UCE or Spam to me since they are not paying for it's delivery, sorting and storage as companies do when they send bulk snail mail.
