Why? Maybe so.....

the weakest link (i.e. a mechanical HD which sucks down batteries) is eliminated. Seems interesting to me that a device that can hold like 2 years worth of music has an 8 hour battery. Give me a week's worth of music, a week's battery charge, and the Apple logo and I'll be happy.

Too right. Some people don't want or need a HD-based player, and if Apple can deliver a flash-based player that has the iPod interface and quality of design, plus seamless integration with iTunes they just might make a bit of money.

The iPod simply isn't marketed to those folks that don't want the ultimate in features and capacity. There are "disposable" devices like this out there from Dlink et al.

Okay, a bit more money then

Some people want the "ultimate in features" but don't want an HD-based player because they don't own gigabytes worth of music, or they want to use the player during high-impact exercise. Flash-based doesn't necessarily imply disposable.

Some people aren't cut out for Apple products, either.

That's a very simple and obvious fact.

Not sure what you're implying. Do you feel that flash-based is somehow inferior? Or is it that since flash will likely mean a lower end (in terms of capacity) that there's something wrong with that? How is this advance anything less than a quality Apple product? (and would your view change if flash technology suddenly took a leap to where 50GB cost Apple pennies to put in the iPod and lose the HD?)

I don't think the 10 seconds that the HDD runs when caching songs on the iPod sucks down the batteries as you think it does.
