What are you using to defrag? |

Shootist Premium join:2003-02-10 Decatur, GA | Well if you really want it defragged you'll need a better program then what is built into XP. To each his own. -- Shooter Ready--Stand By BEEP ******** |

| It is probably because the disk is so full it doesn't have much space to move files around with. 25% is pretty pathetic even if it is the built in XP tool. Since your drive is considerably full however I recommend a 3rd party application like, Disk Keeper Suite Perfect Disk -- - paranoidxe (textsource.org) |

| reply to koam As a rule of thumb, I try to keep at least 20% headroom on a hard drive.
If you can free up some space, you might have better luck with the build in defrag program.
Another thing that you might want to try is to defrag in Safe Mode after deleting temp files and anything else you can shed.
Personally, I use Diskeeper, but I think its in my blood from VMS days.

1 edit | reply to koam If you have System Restore running, disable it temporarily just prior to defragging. Or eliminate all but the last restore point - Right click C Drive > Properties > Disk Cleanup > More Options > System Restore.
Either method will temporarily free up a lot of disk space.
Also. make sure all virus and fire wall programs are not running when you are defragging. |

| reply to koam Did you check your temp folders on your hard drive to make sure they are empty? If you run Clean Disk it will not nuke the crap out of your temp folders so you have to do it manually.
Also being stuck at 25% isn't a big deal, as long as your hard drive is still working away, and you can hear it, leave it alone for a night. If it's still not working, maybe there is a problem with your hard drive itself?
The easiest way to defrag a system is to have a extra hard drive the same size as your system drive, and hook it up to your system and ghost your old rive onto the new one. Ghost seems to put stuff in order again.

| reply to bangaroo Cleaning up System Restore did not free up a whole lot of space because I had SR settings to Minimum already.
I did notice this, though, my boot.ini file is not working. I do see a message on bootup about this, but then it boots anyway. I also saw the message about this file being a problem when I went to: System Properties > Startup and Recovery Settings. -- Danieli Consulting LLC, Strategy and Brandinghttp://kdanieli.com |

I had the same thing happen. Here's what fixed it. Boot in the Safe Mode and then run Win XP Defrag. It will get to 100% and after that when you defrag in Windows (normal boot) it will always get to around 80% or more. My guess it has something to do with running processes. |

| reply to koam You have 3 fragmented files and 1 fragmented folder which is clearly not enough to equal what XP analysis is showing. I have the same thing and mine is 11/21 but it says I don't need to defrag.
This happened to me when I had to use system restore. The XP defrag would never show 0/0 again. So I use PerfectDisk and I know I am at 0/0 while XP analysis is still showing some weird number. |

| reply to DSL_Steve OK. I'm trying to boot into safe mode, but don't know how.
If I go into MSCONFIG, there is not Boot.ini tab because there is a problem with my boot.ini file on this machine (see above).
Restarting the machine and hitting F12 for the boot menu does not give me a safe mode option.
How else to get into safe mode?
thanks -- Danieli Consulting LLC, Strategy and Brandinghttp://kdanieli.com |

1 edit | Repeatedly tap the F8 key as the PC boots. You have to start tapping the F8 key at the very beginning of start-up and continue doing so until you get the boot screen prompting for the Safe Mode boot.
Here's another description of getting into the Safe Mode...

1 edit | Thanks. Here are 4 reports from defrag. These 4 reports are in chronological sequence. 1) Safe mode before defrag, 2) safe mode after defrag. 3) Regular mode before defrag, 4) regular mode after defrag.
Notice how the free space is high in Safe mode and the fragmentation is low, but when we return to regular mode, the free space is low and fragmentation is high again.
