Re: BT slowdowns? Oh it's definitely not the site. I've been trying torrents from sites I previously got 550 kB/s down and 120 kB/s up easily and every time before and now I get HORRIBLE rates. Both up and down, and it doesn't matter which tracker I connect to. |

 | reply to will2k Vancouver,Shaughnessy here
My download speed remains the same in BT, no spikes or descrease in download speed. But my upload speed is crap to the p2p networks, i will get 1 kbs upload then to 500b/s...then to 0. Same thing happening on the DC++ networks.
I got Telus on speed dial. |

 | reply to will2k Man, from all the complaints about Shaw in here, one would think that they would actually grab a brain and clue in on this issue. They are, again as always, too quick to jump the gun and blame the problems that users are experiencing on something else. Well, I know I'll be keeping their phone lines busy.
Vancouver, Shaughnessy, here as well too. I'm experiencing download and upload spikes in BT. Bandwidth tests have shown that my connection is pretty ok, but attempts at downloading using numerous BT clients have shown otherwise. Even though it says I'm connected to ~100 peers and ~30 seeds, my dl/ul rates still suck ass. My ul doesn't even match the rate I set it at anymore. Usually (before the 30th) if I set my max ul rate at say 30kB/s, it'd hit that rate within 10s, but now it just stays at around ~3kB/s. -_-
Wake up Shaw... wake up. |
|
 | reply to will2k I think they HAVE woken up is the thing. Don't ask me how, but it seems as though they've found a way to kill BT. The rest of the internet is fast to me, but connecting to peers just doesn't do anything. Shaw probably realizes that programs like BT are responsible for the majority of their bandwidth usage and they did something about it.
I wish we had more than just telus and shaw here though. I'd probably pay $100 a month for a FAST fibre internet connection with no restrictions. Like 10/2 or something. |
|
 | reply to will2k Still don't know yet that they really have found a way to kill BT... Last day when I was downloading stuff with my friend from the same torrent, the speed could reach up like both 80kbps down and upload stably, and my friend is living in Vancouver also. It's means BT speed still can be really fast if peers are in Vancouver and surrounding area. |
|
 | reply to will2k Is this happending just to i-extreme subscriber or to regular high speed as well?
I personally have i-extreme in Richmond, and BT have been SLOOOOW..:( |
|
 | reply to will2k Seems to be mostly xtreme.
My friend in kits on regular has been getting much better than advertised (almost xtreme) speeds in the past few days. However, another friend on regular in N.Van has been getting worse speeds in the past few days on BT. |
|
 | reply to will2k Hmmm, someone on xtreme should try switching back to normal to see if it makes a difference at all... |

 | Im here in Sydney, Nova Scotia and I have noticed my BTorrents slow to a crawl also, same with friends on the same ISP, i know I am cross country, just find it strange happening here too. I usually get very fast speeds, i have tried testing on a number of clients and configurations, still the same result. My ISP is Eastlink HSI, Always in the top 10-15 fastest isp's on dslreports. FTP/HTTP/other P2P downloads are all still flying. |

| reply to will2k My guess is Shaw has implemented some sort of traffic shaping solution which provides policy-based Quality of Service (QoS) and directly addresses P2P by targeting common file sharing protocols, such as Audio Galaxy, Morpheus, I-MESH, Gnuetella, Bit Torrent, and Kazaa. When these protocols are detected, the software solution limits the bandwidth to a provider-defined cap. |
|
 | If shaw implents any kind of fliter that blocks or caps p2p traffic, it has opened the pandora box. |

 | reply to will2k shoot , bt is still slow in esat van anyone else?can not even go over 80 kbs.i am using the new motorolla modem . |

 | reply to will2k 3 blocks from joyce skytrain. today BT is 1kb down and 1kb up max. It will take days to download the 130Mb vid I'm after. There is no doubt in my mind this is shaw at work. I've been complaining bout my sub 40KBps connection for months and FINALLY I broke the 2Mbit barrier on dslreports speed test. It was pure joy. Then I tried a torrent. It was pure anger. I refuse to believe this is coincidence. Why is this a mystery... as a customer I feel I should be kept up to date with policy and hardware changes. Poor practices shaw... |

Maybe you're right, because the BT download speed wont change no matter which port is used. a Traffic Shaping product looks at ALL packets, no matter what port, right? |

xsmirage join:2004-10-16 West Vancouver, BC | reply to st7860 This in my opinion is the most plausable explanation. Since Shaw thinks they want to use VoIP they will need a way to allocate bandwidth for that. If this really is the case, and Shaw keeps restricting BT Traffic / and P2P in general - I'm gone. I'll pay the $150 a month for 4MB DSL from Telus.
All I can say is they better not be doing this. I vote that we organize a petition, or a group of people in Vancouver @ Least and just go down to Shaw's Building - Protest, ask to meet with the manager or something. Invite some media along, create some pressure - MAKE them listen.
Who's with me? |

 | reply to will2k Subject: RE: Slow Bit Torrent connections
Hello
Thank you for contacting Shaw Internet technical support.
Shaw has certainly not taken any action to throttle BitTorrent traffic. We do not place restrictions of that sort on what a user can do with his/her Internet connection. Rather, there have been problems reported all over the Internet from a good many different service providers about problems with BitTorrent. I've noticed that my own BitTorrent downloads have slowed dramatically, but there is no apparent explanation for the problem. Since the decline in speed only seems to affect BitTorrent (i.e. other downloads are not affected), this suggests that the cause of the problem is with some aspect of the BitTorrent protocol itself, though there are also many users who are reporting no problems at all. We are investigating in order to determine where the cause of the problem is, but since it is being so widely reported outside our network, this suggests that it is not a problem with Shaw, but with BitTorrent, and since we do not produce or support BitTorrent, our options for resolving the problem are limited. We are doing what can be done, however.
I hope that this helps, but if we can be of any further assistance, please let us know.
Thank you for choosing Shaw. |

 | reply to will2k One idea: what if it's azureus? There was an update. Now I've tried other clients and gone back to the old version of azureus, but there are still a lot of people out there using the new version. Perhaps there's a problem with it? |

 | reply to will2k ABC on suprnova.org is running fine for me in Surrey, was pulling 200-300kBps just fine. |
