| I can see why some may not want to upload
Many users have only 128KBPS or 256KBPS upload capacity available to them, and the way TCP works if the upstream link is at capacity, the downstream link will slow since there's no bandwidth to send the ack packets, at least that's how I understand it. I'm fortunate to have a 768KBPS upstream link, so what I tend to do is while downloading I'll set my upload to half my upload capacity, or about 45 kilobytes per second, then when I see my download complete, I'll close the torrent but reopen it with no limits other than my ISP's limit allowing me to upload at about 87K bytes per second. I also have access to a linux server sitting on a 20MBPS link to the internet, and of course on that, I just let things go, that's always fun to watch. I only wish I could give that 87K a second to 1 person so they can download good and fast. that's the only thing I hate about bit torrent, most of my downloads start very very slow and it takes like 10 minutes to hit decent speeds above 1MBPS.. What's cool though is the if you know where to find stuff, the content can rival with what's available on usenet news servers. |
