Re: BT slowdowns Yes, it's Shaw. Those upgrade messages were to install new traffic shapers. It works by picking off P2P uploads, in that rather than killing it, it will limit the uploads, fooling BT into limiting the download. Note: Shaw's intent was not to limit downloads; that's a by-product of BT's implementation when it sees you have a poor download.
Calgary and Edmonton are next, probably before Christmas.
This came about due to customer complaints about High-Speed Internet being... well... not high-speed. The engineers tracked down the problem to all of you (and me too, since I was told of it by a friend) BitTorrenters out there. Turns out there was a lot (A LOT) in BT traffic in Vancouver, so much so that it was causing congestion in the RF/Fiber cable plant, or so I've been told. Cost to fix: $2 to $3 million. Someone said "hey, let's try this instead", using an Ellacoya switch to traffic manage / shape, whatever. They tried it out first in Cordova area of Vancouver. Next day, High-Speed Internet was high-speed again (to the detriment of the P2Pers), and management said "great, you're promoted, now install one in every hubsite."
"Every Vancouver hubsite?"
"Every Shaw hubsite."
Would tech support know this? Probably not. Not because it's secretive or confidential, it's probably just not known. Left-hand talking to the right-hand, etc.
Please note that this should not affect your general internet experience, surfing, online radio, microsoft windows updates, gaming, etc. It just means that you'll get slower uploads of P2P traffic. This means slower downloads on BT; I'm not sure about KazaaLite etc. I hope this doesn't affect your account with Shaw; after all, you all make it possible for me to collect a cheque. |

 | So basically, one of the primary reasons for a high speed connection has been constricted severely.
I take it the higher ups didn't consider the fact that if there is a large amount of BT traffic, it likely comes from a large amount of customers, and those customers will probably leave them. If this persists, I will most certainly change service providers. |

 | reply to ShawInsider Holy christ, that would explain alot man, is there a workaround for this? Can we find/build an app which relist's the BT protocol in anyway. Regardless, I'm going apeshit with my trouble ticket if that's the case. Could you get the application name or the names of the people responsible. I mean fuck, let's keep looking for solutions to whatever this is doing cause this make take a while. |

I'm pissed off at Shaw.
Uh, what if P2P apps such as BT... er, ok what if a P2P app such as BT were to makeup my general internet experience? In other words, what if I only use BT?
By shaping and controlling their P2P traffic, isn't Shaw essentially denying the customers a portion of the service that they supposedly are trying to provide?
If this is true, then shouldn't there be some sort of fine-print somewhere? And because there isn't some sort of fine-print somewhere, isn't this screaming out, "LAWSUIT"? Isn't this extreme crap false advertising? Up to 5Mb download and 1Mb upload and in the fine print, EXCEPT WITH P2P APPLICATIONS.
So what if there is a lot of BT traffic in Vancouver? Is their justification of implementing this P2P traffic shaper based upon their bandwidth usage abuse policy? If it is, doesn't that mean that the policy requires reshaping?
Well whatever, enough. It's not much skin off my back to just switch to a provider which doesn't shape their P2P traffic, though I'd kind of hate to lose my email address. Hopefully those other providers don't decide to jump on the bandwagon and implement this P2P traffic shaping device as well. |

 | reply to ShawInsider I should clarify before this gets any further that what I said was not an official position of Shaw Communications Inc., nor that the events I describe actually occurred the way I described them; this was my perception only; I was not present at any meetings about this topic; it was relayed to me through a co-worker.
Please don't bring this up; I need this job and don't want to be fired. I did not mean to offend anyone; my words to were meant to spread the truth as I see it, and to prevent people from troubleshooting this by re-installing Windows and SP2, as I've had to do it too many times and it's such a pain in the ass.
In fact, can the Admin for this forum please remove my previous two posts? Thanks. |

ShawInsider, don't worry, your IP isn't public and there's no way Shaw can find out your IP from posting here unless they have a court order against DSLReports/BroadbandReports (which i seriously doubt will happen). Keep posting, your help is appreciated. -- nfx |

Don't put it past Shaw to break any laws regarding "getting" their employees. They tend to pull out all the stops to achieve their end means. This is how they present the appearance of everything running smoothly, as they will make any individuals life hell if they should say anything other than what SHAW feels you need to know. |

This is how they present the appearance of everything running smoothly, as they will make any individuals life hell if they should say anything other than what SHAW feels you need to know. About the only ways Shaw can find out who this person is 1. check which IPs of theirs were accessing BBR at the time of the post (probably a few IPs). Then they could cross reference that with the IPs all of their employees had at the time in question. A sizeable job to say the least. or 2. the court order route, good luck too as they don't have much of a good reason to have that info released to them.
But yea, ShawInsider... please keep posting up info as it comes available to you. But only if you're comfortable with doing so, we all need a job so don't risk yours if you don't want to.
There are a couple of options open to you here, you can either quit posting the info. Keep posting as you were. register with the site and IM info to anyone here that's willing to post for you (I would and you have my word that I won't rat you out to anyone). -- Join BroadbandReports.com's SETI@Home Team Don't let your computer's idle time go to waste! |

 | reply to ShawInsider quote: Cost to fix: $2 to $3 million.
Shaws been bragging about having 1 Million Internet subs. One million subs at $40 minimum per month = $40 million a month in revenues and thats just Internet. Just under HALF a BILLION dollars a year (more if you include x-treme rates!) and they're too cheap to fix it!...or do they think as consumers were too stupid to see this?...and your not peed off enough yet?? |

 | reply to Tyrantt00 I just called and freaked out on a surpervisor for the second time in 2 weeks reguarding this, I basically told them I was warned my usage was too high and that I should switch to ShawExtreme, so I did. And now its being slowed down? SCREW THAT! He really couldnt say much except "we dont know anything about this, etc" but I did get him to refund the Extreme portion of the bill payment, its 10$
At least I got *something* out of those bastards.
Everybody please do the same, if you are getting HORRID BT rates, you can eventually talk to someone at Shaw who will refund you, and this is something worthy of asking a refund for in my opinion. |
