Great news. Thanks!

Also, further proof that Vendors forum is unhelpful.

Thanks for posting it here.

Edit: Hmm. They will notify existing users via the auto-update! But they'll need to download the new version manually. I'm curious about how the notice appears -- I just completed an update, but didn't see anything.

GRISOFT will notify AVG Free Edition users about the availability of the new AVG Free Edition via the regular update process.

Not sure what that means either. They may be thinking to do this when they get a little closer to stopping support on version 6. I just installed the new version and let it remove the old version during the installation process. Went real smooth.

Just used the update manager for 6.0 and am now downloading a 3313k file. I'm guessing this is the 7.0 version. Will take a while on dial up.

Don't count on it. Mine was 3,236 KB too, but my program version is still 6.0.793.

There was an update that was almost as big back in March. I think it also depends on how often you update -- I hardly ever do.

System Resources

The Primary reason for my shift to AVG Free from NAV was due to the speed factor.

NAV was just killing my old Pentium 3 system. I shifted to AVG 6 a few weeks back and was thrilled at the fact that my system was so much faster.

Is AVG 7 a resource hog or idoes it consume more or less the same resources as AVG 6?

Should I stick with AVG 6 if I am concerned about AVg taking up too much of my system resources?

You don't have a choice. Updates to AVG 6 stop in another month, rendering it USELESS. I'm waiting until then, but I too am interested in the answers to your questions.

As B See Profile and FunnyBones See Profile mentioned, support for version 6 will end at the end of the year. This is the hit on my WinME box. If you install the Personal E-mail scanner, that will add more to the resource usage. I use Eudora on this machine and AVG supports it directly so I didn't need the Personal EMS. I believe AVG supports Eudora, Outlook 97/98/2000/XP & The Bat! directly, all others including Outlook Express will have to use the EMS. If mail scanning is not that critcal for you, you can always elect to do a custom install and not install the EMS.

Does AVG 7 have an option to install as an on demand scanner only?

hmm, good thought and I don't no. If you select Custom install, there is a checkbox for the Resident scanner so that implies that it is an option. I don't know if it would proceed if it wasn't selected though. Maybe I can do a little test on that tomorrow and see what happens.

Doesn't matter. When you install it, you can go to the control center and stop the resident scanning. Right DP?

Thanks. I think I'll give this version a whirl. I first tried it a year or two ago but it didn't play well with Eudora so hopefully this new version will work out for me.

Well AVG's email scanner still causes problems with Eudora. My guess is that AVG locks Eudora's mail DBs because Eudora complains that it cannot open them for reading. Also the resident scanner cannot be fully disabled from the AVG CC.

What I did was to uninstall and reinstall without the resident and email scanners. Seems to be working satisfactorily now.

I'm not sure with this version yet. If you look at the RTM properties there is nothing there to disable it. I suppose you could uncheck all the boxes there so it isn't doing anything. It still would be loaded though. Still feeling my way around with this new one

One thing I don't like is they have disabled the URL editor and it only has free.grisoft.com listed. Modification of the Update URL is only available in AVG Pro. There is no longer a url.ini file.

So then it does give you the option to install without resident and e-mail scanners. That's good to know. I've read many posts on here about people using avg as non-resident on demand but I use it as resident.
