| Norton AV 2003 vs Norton AV 2005?
Hi wondering if anyone can give me some advice here.
I have been using NAV 2003 for a while, and it has worked fine. Last year I tried out NAV 2004 but it was a mess: made browsing the net slow to a crawl among other things - so I ended up going back to NAV 2003. So now here I am once again. Is there any significant change in terms of protection accorded by NAV 2005? Can I just continue with 2003? Any advice would greatly be appreciated. |

@cable.rogers | reply to jsts That thread didn't really help unfortunately. Basically just wondering if I would be doing myself a diservice by continuing to use 2003. 2004 didn't work for me and I am reluctant to try 2005 if I don't need to. Any comments would be appreciated. |

| reply to jsts jsts do yourself a favor and try another AV product (not trying to bash Norton) there are MANY other products far superior to Norton for less money. I would suggest looking into Kaspersky or even F-Secure (personally I would recommend Kaspersky).

| reply to jsts I'll second kavuser's sentiments. I've developed quite the dislike of Norton recently. However...

You DO need to, IF you want to stick with Norton products. I'm sorry to say, NAV 2003 is woefully inadequate against today's malware, and even in some cases yesterday's. The reason for this is 2003 does not have the unpackers (note: I am not referring to archives like zip and rar here, though NAV 2003 is lacking in that area too, it can't scan in RARs) that the newer versions do. It may have the definitions for virus x and virus y, but if they're "packed" with certain methods now commonly used, NAV 2003 will not detect them.
If you feel the need to be well protected (and hey, how many of us don't feel that need?) you should go out and buy a new AV product. The free ones quite frankly don't cut it. If you had problems with NAV 2004 you should consider making the switch to some other vendor's offering. Note also that some other vendors, such as McAfee, provide not only signature updates but engine updates, meaning you don't have to buy a new version every year like with Norton, which doesn't provide such updates. -- TCPA - Treacherous Computing Kerio 2.1.5 - Best damn firewall Licenses should be per user, Ditch Norton! I would suggest looking into Kaspersky or even F-Secure (personally I would recommend Kaspersky). That's what I did a long time ago. I also decided to look into Kaspersky and I realized that this is the AV I had been looking for. I have never looked back. If you decide to buy another AV, please make sure to get rid of NAV completely. Those switching from NAV to KAV often say their new AV doesn't run properly due to NAV files and registry keys that are left on their systems. Anyway, I'm not trying to bash NAV either, but I agree with Dr Tweak : there are better products you can get for less money. |

| reply to jsts Not sure of your system config but it works like a charm on mine.
Suggestion: If your virus definitions is still valid. Keep what you got. If it is expiring (say in a week..) and you want NAV again, go for NAV 2005 which has new features but you must disable Worm Protection if you are using another firewall program.
I think you should first install the trial version before purchasing. If it will not play nice, you can go back to NAV 2003 and renew the subscription or use another AV. -- Microsoft MVP-Windows Security - »www.microsoft.com/technet/securi···ult.mspxMember of ASAP - »www.a-sap.orgCalendar of Updates - »cou.dozleng.com |

| reply to jsts One thing about NAV that I like is once you have bought it, you can upgrade to a new version for between $10. and free (if you registered it) if you just wait till the end of the year, when you'll see it on sale at places like BestBuy and CompUSA. |
