| reply to dellsweig Great tool. It does not seem to find my XP Pro SP2 computers that don't have anything shared - I guess that means the SP2 firewall is working. -- NOTHING justifies terrorism. We don't negotiate with terrorists. Those that support terrorists are terrorists. |

I still like the program...
There must be some way to find out that someone is there. If you assign a duplicate IP, someone figures it out and tells you it is a dup. -- NOTHING justifies terrorism. We don't negotiate with terrorists. Those that support terrorists are terrorists. |

If you're not pingable, it won't find you. Other then that, it's pretty nifty. I would disagree on the pingable comment. I used the app with the XP firewall (with ping/ICMP off) as well as my proxy's linux firewall and Zonealarm. It worked correctly on all three.
Just my observations,

I had my linux kernel ignoring icmp - it was not detected. I enabled it, it was detected. Perhaps if it is enabled but blocked in the FW that "looks" different? |

| reply to dellsweig I looked at the XP SP2 firewall. It is behaving properly - it is not responding to any ICMP requests, which is why it is not visible to l@l. If I adjust the settings, l@l can see the computers. -- NOTHING justifies terrorism. We don't negotiate with terrorists. Those that support terrorists are terrorists. |

  Carlo Medas
@fastres.net
| Hi All, I'm Carlo Medas, Look@LAN Network Monitor author.
This post is to clarify the situation: actual Look@LAN freeware version bases its scan upon ICMP ping request/reply: to scan very fast the network, and to not generate too much traffic while doing it, it sends a ICMP ping request as first sampling analysis. It queries about NetBIOS and SNMP only nodes that have previously answered to its ping requests. So we can really tell that this is a huge and tough limit. In fact, in the next release, it will be possible to fully customize the scan criteria, so you will be able to perform a more complete network discovery.
Best regards,
Carlo Medas »www.lookatlan.com |
