Speed Problem in Elgin, IL

Hello all,

Just got DSL through SBC. First day speed test results are below:

•2004-11-16 21:28:44 Speed test @ dslreports-west1.speakeas 718/309 kbps
2 days later, speed was so slow wherever we surfed, so I did another speed test and a Line Test:

•2004-11-18 22:31:51 Speed test @ dslreports-west1.speakeas 98/306 kbps
»/quality/nil/1571750

Just wanted to know if anyone experienced problems yesterday. Is this a result of the first 10 days of "configuration" and "testing"?

Using a Speedstream 5100b, shared through a BEFW11S4.

Thanks.

Do a speedtest at »help.sbcglobal.net/dsl/speedtest and try both chicago and elmhurst.

Also make sure nothing is running in the background of your PC.

I'll try it when I get home.

When you say nothing should be running in the background, which services/applications are you referring to?

Thanks.

Anything that uses a the internet so sending/receiving email, IM clients, surfing the net anything. Just let the speedtest run and don't touch your PC

I think he might be seeing a problem that I had and some others have posted in the last few days, upload speeds are just fine but downloads have gone in the dumpster.

He could be....problem is some times the DSLR and SE servers aren't very good for speedtests like the used to be plus they are outside the SBC network.

But in this case, for me, they're accurate since doing a FTP from one of my servers also is mirroring the speed decrease and my VoIP phone service quality went in the dumpster.

Well you might be on the big thread of chicago speed problems then...i had that issue was well but it did get fixed.

If you haven't posted in SBC Direct I would do that and also download and run ping plotter 24/7 and update your thread with those graphs. Set ping plotter to 5 second trace, unlimited and all.....some where in the sbc network you are getting major packet loss then.

For me it only happened at night time for about 4-5 hours.

I did that yesterday and they were telling me it was may end even after I pointed him to the other threads concerning this issue. This AM speeds were fine with no change on my end, it will be interesting to see what it looks like tonight. Comcast is running a special, maybe it's time to switch?

You can if you want but you won't get the support you do here from these techs. Trust me run ping plotter for a good 2 hours tonight especially when it's happening and post that in your thread.

SBC has problems from time to time as to all providers. Helping the techs pin point the problem as much as possible helps things get resolved much quicker. That was the only reason my issue got fixed was ping plotter running at the settings I described. A normal tracert didn't show any packet loss.

I was not telling you it was on your end. I was trying to prove that it was not on your end to anybody I had to take the issue to. We had not proven it was not on your end yet, I was trying to walk you through that.

Sorry, that was the impression that I was coming away with when you're asking me to try different systems (which I had said all had the same problem). I know you must assume that the problem is with the customer first but it's frustating to the customer to basically have to rip their network apart with they know it's not them but the ISP with the problem, especially when there are other threads on DSLReports with others saying they have the same problem all of a sudden.

I've been having speed problems at night also. I'm not on every night so can't tell if it is very consistant. I did have some major slow down last night. »Slow speeds in downtown Indy

I'll see how it looks tonight if I'm home or not too hammered.;) It is almost Miller time..:)

dont change anything on your system, SBC does this regularly.
I have a speratic (sp) download speed while my up is stable at 313.
I normally get 1245 / 313 consistant, in Wheeling.
This is the first time this lasted more than one day tho'
Give it some time, and it will come back.
Just don't go crazy changing any settings, cause it'll drive you crazy.

It is not normally like this. Mine was working fine earlier today in Elgin, but tonight I cannot hardly do anything now. I had a 68.20.. IP and was getting packet loss. Reconnected and apparently ended up with what was a Southfield Michigan 66.73.. IP. In fact my gateway during traceroutes first resolved to adsl-66-73-7-254.dsl.sfldmi.ameritech.net and later resolved to adsl-66-73-7-254.dsl.chcgil.ameritech.net. My IP resolved to both sfldmi and chcgil names.

I do not know if this IP shuffle is a cause of routing problems or an attempt to resolve something else that is broken. But everything is unusually very slow for me tonight.

I'm running pretty slow myself again tonight. I'm gathering some data on pingplotter right now. Looks like lots of packet loss. I'm downloading a file and it keeps stopping and starting. Was doing same thing last night. Video streams do same thing. Stop and go.

Last night my speed also dropped 35% on the download side. It cleared up again in the wee hours. Sync was ok, though.

Wow. I thought I would check in here to see if there were reports of problems and, yes, there are. I , too, am running very slow and, yes, I live in Elgin. It is 10:00 PM central time.

I don't know if this helps, but my SN is slightly lower as well.

I'm having the same issues in Hoffman Estates. I'm averaging half the download than I am normally used to about 600 kbps.
