| reply to drake I use Zone Alarm Pro, but I voted wrong. Duh!
I should have voted: Router and software firewall
I also have a Linksys router (Model BEFSR41) but I don't know how to configure it with ZAPro.
I am getting a lot of port scans, probes and incoming attacks. -- MuSeheart

| reply to drake Linksys WRT54G wired to a SuSe Linux 9.0 Desktop. Second really old box is hard-drive installed Damn Small Linux running a webserver. Also an XP laptop connected via wireless, WEP encrypted, MAC filtered, SSID broadcast disabled. XP laptop runs SP2, Norton AV, ZAFree, and Spybot Search and Destroy. Every scan I have ever done (both here and grc.com) show only port 80 open (which makes sense given the web server). Use Netscape as my browser on both computers (to avoid IE exploits) and only do email on the Linux box (to avoid various email exploits and Outlook issues). The vast majority of SPAM is filtered out by Comcast and the few that get through are hit with SpamAssassin filters.
Security is an evolving process with no single answer. My guess is most people here know that. |

| reply to drake You list Sygate/ Sygate Pro together. Yet you seperate ZAF and ZAP! This interferes with true interpretation, yet ZAP is still on top. Says a lot for Zone Alarm if you ask me. -- Nemo me impune lacessit. [No one provokes me with impunity] -- Motto of the Crown of Scotland |

| reply to drake only thing i run is norton antivirus 2005...........the way i see it is i am a hardcore gamer so a firewall does two things for me. one it is a resource hog, and i have no use for that kind of item running while i am gaming and second, if anyone wants in your PC they will gain access no matter what precautions you see fit to take against it. just my 2 cents |

| reply to drake I voted *Nix, but I actually have two daisy chained router/firewalls... One NAT/Firewall box (RT311) and a Openbsd router/firewall that does traffic monitoring, wired/wireless network separation and internetwork routing. -- SHUTUP! Viva La Fee' Verte! |

| reply to drake I use a router w/ NAT and software firewall, one that is also listed in the selections above. I didn't select one of the options since they were redundant. Perhaps you may want to create a more direct poll for those who use both (listed in detail of which ones), and those who just use software only, hardware only, none, etc.. --

| reply to drake I use my Netgear FVS318. I also use iptables on linux and the windows firewall on windows.
I have the fvs318 set to log to my linux machine.
At one point I was using snort and acid but because my machine was behind the router it didn't have all that much use. |
