1 edit | reply to drake Re: The Security Firewall Poll - 2004
Well, I'm behind 2 NAT devices Netopia 3341 Modem - which provides NAT Linksys WRT54G Router Computers (wired) Micron - XP Pro with ZA pro 5.5.062 Dell Dimension -W2K with ZA pro 5.5.062 Generic - 2003 with MS Firewall (I don't like it but ZA won't work on 2003) Dell Optiplex - Test machine - depends on what I'm working on Computers (wireless) Dell Optiplex - XP Pro with ZA pro 5.5.062
So I think that between the NAT devices, software firewalls & running SAV, with scans from Ad-Aware, Spybot & Pest Patrol [yes, I know it gives false positives - that's why I run it after Ad-Aware & Spybot] I think I'm pretty secure.
But these days, you can't be really completely secure, you can just try your best, so I keep checking [and lurking in the BBR security forum:)]. |

| reply to drake I voted *nix flavored since I use Astaro Security Linux since it gets the external public address and NATs the internal net.
Additional ones: 2 WinXP boxes - 1 with Sygate Personal, 1 with PC-Cillin Internet security. 3 more Linux boxen all with custom iptables rules. -- You might be a drunkard if you get mad at your friends (they can't handle their liquor) because they keep stepping on your fingers. |

1 edit | reply to drake a separate poll for hardware versus software firewalls may be more efficient and easier to read/analyze. Also, different versions of software firewalls may be helpful as well.
For me, I have a NAT router and hardware firewall installed in my WISP's antenna unit, along with an inside NETGEAR WGT624v.2 wireless router with a firewall, along with Kerio Personal Firewall v.2.1.5 (sofware) installed and running on all computers in my home LAN.

| reply to drake At home up north I have a WRT54g and ZA Pro 5, down south its a FWG114p with Kerio and on the Macs I am using the standard firewall built into OS X 10.3.6. At work using Watchguard Firebox 700 and Cisco 515e with Symantec Client Security on laptops and SP2 firewall turned on the desktops -- all machines are managed and imaged nightly. 1 edit | reply to gracie Yes, gracie - I even thought about doing so - after the poll was posted. I couldn't edit anything at the point.
*Looks around and ducks for cover*
[Edit] Also to note: I was pretty much getting a recent poll up as a copy from the older polls that are now drowned in the archives. -- [ RoadRunner Cable: 3072/384 @ $44.99!; 2868/360 Solid Speed! / OptimumOnline Cable: 10Mbps/1Mbps @44.99!; 9372/965 Speed! ::Ride The Coax!:: ] |

| reply to gracie There should have been choice for "Router Only" ancient computer. a software firewall really slows the system down. I do have AVG anti-virus running and also run Ad-Aware and spybot also. and use an off brand browser-Maxthon. Also a lot of common sense helps.
