I guess I feel pretty secure! YMMV! As is so often said, "I wouldn't be so paranoid if they all weren't out to get me!" In addition to the Linksys BEFSR41 router, I have 2Wire Home Portal 1000SW DSL modem with its excellent firewall. I have NIS2004, ADware, SpyBot and SpyWareBlaster.
If this isn't enough, I can only restrict myself to specific domains and specific IP addresses as my last attempt to secure myself. |

| reply to drake I'm using "A router and a software firewall"
The router: Linksys BEFW1154 Wireless Access Point Router I've had a laptop where I've used this for the wireless connection. But now that I've given the laptop to my brother, and I've used this as a router.
The software firewall: Outpost Pro 2.5 Outpost Pro 2.5 has the best extensive logging options I've seen with any firewall. And when I say the best, I mean that it does what I want in the layout and style that I like.
Outpost Pro 2.5 also provides component control and hidden process control where it allows you to block the hidden processes of a program from going out to the internet while allowing the main program access. These are just a few examples of what Outpost Pro can do.
Outpost Pro also allows you to really go down to the nuts and bolts of firewall protection, giving you full control of whats going on, or you can choose Outpost Pro to do it for you.
And Outpost is secure enough to pass any tests I throw at it.
So far the only thing that I don't like is the system tray icon. Its sort of unused because the tooltip only shows the networks its protecting. I think it could also show something else to make it more usefull, maybe like bytes received or whatever.
But this is too picky of a request considering everything else that is doing.
But a very awesome firewall, love it.

Router: BEFSX41
Running latest firmware found in the linksys forum, seems very stable.
Firewall: SP2 firewall
SP2 firwall works okay.
I've also got much more, however, including WallWatcher, MyNetwatchman, and MRTG, all of which I scrutinize daily. -- Touch a thistle timidly, and it pricks you; grasp it boldly, and its spines crumble. -William S. Halsey

| reply to drake This poll needs to have a choice for each computer. I would never run a software firewall on my W98SE box. It is protected only by my router and it never goes on dial up if Road Runner goes down because it is now networked to my XP box. Before I got the XP box, I had the 98SE box tied down so tight it needed no router or software firewall. I had to loosen everything to network it.
I run ICF on the XP box only for the purpose of using that box if I have to go on dialup. I'm probably going to unnetwork them and tie them both down tightly so I don't need to ever think of using a software firewall even for dialup as I hate them with a passion. I'd like to tie them down so that I don't need the router either. The router is a hassle. Any voltage dip (no matter how slight and fleeting) knocks the router off even though it is on a UPS. -- The first and foremost function of our jurors is to protect private citizens from a tyrannical and intrusive government...Jurors are the last line of defense for liberty. | reply to drake I voted for Windows XP SP2 Firewall, because ZA Pro V5 really messed up my broadband speeds. I suppose I could check out again, but I was really disappointed in ZA V5. They left QA in the closet for that release.
