These aren't magazine publishers or small town dairies -- they're an absolutely vital part of the economy for just about everyone.
"Checking accounts" and "phones" are absolutely vital parts of our economy, but those shouldn't be free either.
Perfect examples! They're not free (though the former frequently are), but they are absolutely regulated in one or more ways by government. Banks and telcos are required to do all sorts of things in an effort to comply with laws meant to protect consumer rights. Each of those "things" costs that organization MONEY, so yes, you are getting a form of service "free" because the government made the bank adhere to certain practices.

Big hairy deal. Now the poor underfunded credit cartel has to let some savvy consumers know what the heck they've compiled in their dossiers, and without having to pay for the privilege. I can certainly live with that.

The collective mission statements of these private services boils down to fair & accurate reporting.
This is just a step in the right direction to help them achieve their goals.

Why should a private organization be required to give you, or anybody else, free service? Why not require the milkman to give you a free gallon of milk every year? And a free issue of Playgirl while they're at it?

Steve
So we should pay for the duty of checking that the credit info collected on ourselves is indeed accurate & up to date?
Agreed. At least one review per year of personal credit information collected by us or attached to our personal credit information by fraud should be free. It's my personal information that determines whether I'm given or denied credit. This is in no way similar to any other "product".

Part of the reason for the legislation was that the credit bureaus were irresposible in that it was very difficult to get mistakes corrected. A lot of people got screwed by them. This is to ensure that folks will be able to get their reports corrected in a timely manner, as well as looking out for ID theft. And how much does it cost them to do this? Probably not very much(especially over the Net). If you want the government to butt out then don't make people mad enough to write their legislators. I don't like unfunded government mandates either, but the big boys act like bullies sometimes and invite government intervention. Myself, I will get one over the net. Not worried about security, mostly cause there's nothing there to steal.

Using the website is absolutely safe and secure, barring there is not spyware/virus on the individuals own computer that might steal information transmitted over the connection. I work for one of the bureau's and trust me, information is our sole asset. I assume the other two bureaus would take as much security precaution as my company would to protect our asset. Remember, all the thousands of employees that work for the bureau's are also consumers and trust that the information in our files is safe, secure and accurate.

so does this 'automatically' enroll you in some expensive hard to cancel service like freecreditreport.com does?

Re: Potential Security Issues?

with out taking it to much off topic $54 for gas sometimes in L.A. will only last for 3 days depending on how much you drive and what you drive.

Regarding credit history it self, you have a right to get credit history for free every time you get denied for cc,loan or anything that involves checking your credit history score. If someone that can't afford to spend $54 a year on credit history shouldn't worry to much about his credit as crooks don't steal people identity that don't have allot of money

Not true.
Identity thieves are looking for credit worthy identities.
Assets play into credit scores, but not as much as you may think. People who "don't have allot of money" can easily have a better credit rating than people who do have a lot money.

A vast majority of U.S. residents can get free checking, either through keeping a certain amount of funds in their account or by shopping around. I haven't paid for a checking account since th 1970's. I have paid for checks though.

... which is the result of private negotiation between you and a service provider: that's how it should be.

They should not be obligated by law to provide it free (e.g., without the negotiation that you went through), and I suspect we'll all find out just how good this "free" credit service actually turns out to be.

How? It's not open yet.

And doesn't freecreditreport.com force you to try a useless monitoring service?

Let me be honest here, no one gives away anything for nothing. There is a price for everything. In order to get a free credit report from freecreditreport.com you must sign up for the Credit Check Monitoring service. The trick to getting your free credit report is to cancel the Monitoring service before your thirty days are up.
