viofamPremium join:2001-07-17 Clarksville, TN | [Camera] best value nikkor wide angle lens for D70? I get lost in the array of Nikon lens available for the D70 -- what Nikkor lens is currently the best value in a wide angle to normal range?
My daughter's F100 came with a Nikkor 24-120mm f3.5-5.60 AF Zoom lens. A few months ago, we got her a D70 (body only) and she's been switching the lens between bodies. Because the lens was not designed for the digital format, it does not really function as a wide angle.
I'd prefer not to duplicate the zoom lens she already owns, but some overlap is o.k. Thanks! |

| Re: [Camera] best value nikkor wide angle lens for It really depends on how much you want to spend. The Nikkor 12-24, f4.0 DX Would be a very good lens, but it's kind of pricey at about $950. A lot of people like the 18-70 kit lens that can be had for about $340. Then there is the 17-55, f2.8 DX for about $1,400. The 18-35, f 3.5-4.5 D ED AFS can be had new for about $500.
Overall the best value is probably the kit lens, or a good used lens. The 17-55, f2.8 gets rave reviews from everyone and would be my first choice.
If you don't need a zoom lens the 20mm, f2.8 D can be bought for under $500 new and around $300 for a good used one. |

| The sigma 12-24 is supposed to be a pretty good lens. I have read complaints about not being able to use a protective filter on the front lens element. It does not a filter ring. It has a drop in rear filter, and I don't know if you can use a circular polarizer or not. |

"[T]he first fisheye lens designed specifically for digital SLR photography is also the first to achieve a full-frame 180 degree picture angle."
This is cool, too.
"The "Fisheye to Wideangle Transformation" function in the optional Nikon Capture 4 software package transforms diagonal fisheye images shot using the AF DX Fisheye-Nikkor 10.5mm f/2.8G ED to ultra-wideangle photos, (by transforming the type of projection). This is an appealing new feature made possible only with digital photography and with the Nikon Total Imaging System." -- Your first 10,000 photographs are your worst. -Henri Cartier-Bresson |
