| [connectivity] Help - Phone Rings and drops DSL
My phone rings and most of the time my DSL connection drops connection. While the person is on the phone the DSL comes back on, it doens't matter if the phone is off or on hook to regain connection.
Any ideas?

Unplug all the phones and try one at a time, you most likely have a bad filter. |

Well why are you on the internet when you should be answering your phone anyway (you're probably one of those people who screen calls with an answering machine)?
Seriously, do you have an old Western Electric phone (you know, the kind that you could drop from the top of the Empire State Building and it would still work) with an inductive ringer (i.e. a real bell--no pun intended)? I have heard that some people have problems when these phones are connected even with a filter installed (perhaps it has something to do with too much current being pulled across the line when it rings--or a ground issue). -- "Remember, Comrade, people who are willing to destroy an efficient telephone system may not be playing with a full deck." |

No but I do have 5 phones on filters. -- "Democracy is the worst form of government except for all those others that have been tried."-Winston Churchill |

Try this:
Unplug all the phones and then plug one in at a time (using the filters of course). Each time use a cell phone (or another land line) to call your number. Let the phone ring and see if you can maintain your internet connection. If you can maintain the connection with all the phones individually, then try plugging in two at a time, then three, etc. You may be able to isolate the "offending" phone or it could be that you just have too many phones plugged in. Also, the problem may be one of the filters (if you use individual filters and not a whole-house filter at the NID). If you find a single "offending" phone, then see if it still offends with a different filter; if it does not then the problem is likely the previously used filter. -- "Remember, Comrade, people who are willing to destroy an efficient telephone system may not be playing with a full deck." |
