Re: Netgear DG834G intermittent timeout/connectivi

I had the same problems with a DB834G and BTOpenworld, and was already using static DNS IP addresses on my clients, over an Ethernet connection. The problems magically disappeared when I used DNS servers other than BT's.

I had the same trouble as above described in Italy with Tiscali ISP.
After having called the NETGEAR support, I was advised to make a hardware reset for 10 seconds (I did it).
Than they asked me to change the MTU from 1500 to 1418.
I did it and suddely my line was working very well !!!

No anymore blocks, no problem on DNS, nothing, simply a very fast connection:

250Kb/s in download from the Ethernet Card
135 Kb/s in download with the wireless WG511

Simply fantastic.

I hope this will help you as well.
I'm using the last beta firmware but I assume that also the 1.05 will work the same.

Well i hopes this helps as i know this has helped me loads.

There is a new firmware for this router that was found on the open source page at the netgear site. This firmware has corrected all of my problems which i was suffering, and i wasent the only one seeing these problems. The firmware is located at :
»kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_file···1238.asp the firmware version is 1.10.08, the img file is contained within the archive, i have had no problems with this firmware.

Also check out this huge thread over at netgear:

Strange... I am not sure if this is a slightly different problem, but I must admit that when I was having the problem previously then I didn't try going so far back.

I can report that my setup has been rock solid since the new ISP has been in place. Weird.

Re: Netgear DG834G intermittent timeout/connectivity

Hi,

I have the same problem, but only with Firmware V1.05.00 and V1.04.01.
Tried all the thinks which where described in this tread. Nothing helped.
Found even some information on the Netgear Support Homepage for the DG834 about "Internet Connection Drops Repeatedly"
»kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_file···0772.asp

Tried all suggested settings there. Changed the MTU to 1468 (for DHCP which we use in Sweden for DSL), and finally I tried with 1400 as described on the homepage. But the router did still drop the internet connection. I could see this when I was looking at "Statistics" under "Router Status", that the WAN connection was once active since only a couple of seconds since that the router has dropped the connection.

Finally I downgraded to Firmware Version 1.03.00 which works perfectly for me. No problems at all.

Re: Netgear DG834G intermittent timeout/connectivi

Well....

I am now up and running with my new ISP (Metronet - very good so far).

I decided to take the plunge again with the netgear - warning my wife and son that "we might be down for a while".

Plugged it all in. Managed to access the router and changed the login/password. And - everything works! I have not changed anything else on the router (this is the same box/config that was continuing to show the timeout problems).

Just to be sure I changed the PnP and other small settings mentioned in this thread, but I have not gone and set manual DNS up.

I don't know where this leaves us. The only thing that has now changed is the ISP...

Well - I am going to have to leave it for a few days of course, to see if it stays stable.

Re: Netgear DG834G intermittent timeout/connectivity

I have the Netgear dg834g and have had problems with the web pages not opening properly it sometimes took three attempts at refreshing before it kicked in. After some abuse from the missus I had a look at the problem.
Basically I found that we first had a BT USB ADSL speedtouch modem which worked ok. When I got the Netgear I left the Speedtouch ADSL filter in place which looked identical to the Netgear one. Why change it? I found by actually using the Netgear filter the internet jumped back into action. It's worth checking your line filters are made by modem manufacturer!
It is set to DHCP and is mainly used by network cable and occasionally by wireless. It only seems to have a small range though before losing signal strength I thought it would cover the whole house. Was I expecting too much?
Hope this helps.

Re: Netgear DG834G intermittent timeout/connectivi

Regarding the DNS-settings there is actually a way to use DHCP and still have a fully functional DNS.

If you specify the DNS-addresses to use under Setup / Basic Settings, these addresses will be sent to the client during DHCP-negotiation. (Instead of the routers address if you get the DNS-settings automatically from the ISP.)

This seems to be undocumented behaviour at least in firmware 1.05.

Now I'm about to disable the keyword blocking...

Neil,
I've found yet another setting in the DG834 that seems to slow the router down. Try setting the function "Keyword blocking" to "never". Even if there are no entry's in the keyword list (or a "blank field" entry) then the router still checks this list. I can see a noticeable difference in speed to find a URL when I toggle this function on or off.
Also read in the forum elsewhere that the UPnP function in the router (default to on) is causing problems with firewalls when it does a port scan. If you don't have a network printer, storage device or gateway to another network then turn UPnP to off.
Hope the change to your new ISP has worked out ok.
Will

Re: Netgear DG834G intermittent timeout/connectivity

It is a fault with the latest DG834 series of routers & netgear suggest manually setting the dns servers on every pc inside your network. This is a bit disappointing on a modern router to have to do the dns manually. I returned mine after 4 days & a total of 18 hours uptime in those four days.I did get a full refund though .

I disabled the automatic DNS and put the router on the wall instead of on the desk. It got more stable but still drops internet connection, just not as frequently..
Back to configuring..

Re: Netgear DG834G intermittent timeout/connectivi

Just to say many thanks again, Will.

Since making those changes I haven't had a single lost page. Touch wood this is the answer. I recommend trying this to anyone else having "page not available" problems with this router.

By the way, gliderboy, I don't think there is a timeout setting (for attempting to get pages)on the DG834G. (I may be wrong and not have noticed it!) The only timeout setting is for idle timeout (ie when not being used) and this is set to 0 (= never disconnect).

Thanks Will - I will try this out next week once I have changed ISP.

Re: Netgear DG834G intermittent timeout/connectivity

I am no expert but had a similar problem with an earlier DG814 (not wireless) and solved it by increasing the idle timeout from the default 5 mins to 100 mins. Not ideal but it worked.

Hello Neil (and Jim),

Sorry to hear you are still having problems.

I have tried many different settings on my DG834GT, apart from the wireless lockup which I know is a separate issue and depends how much metal is close to the router, I have found that the router is at it's fastest and most reliable when I disable the internal DHCP facility and manually assign an IP address to each of my PC's and laptops. My ISP uses a primary and alternate DNS server but I don't think the router queries the alternate, i.e. if the page can't be found or the primary is busy then I don't think this router queries the alternate. It could also be a timeout problem, when I used to connect to the internet just through a modem and single pc if I miss-typed a URL then IE explorer would quite happily wait for up to twenty seconds before responding with "page not found" but using this NETGEAR router and in auto DHCP/DNS mode I would get the "page not found" after just 4 seconds!
I now have two conventional PC's connected by cable and two laptops connected by wireless.

I have set the adaptors in each PC and laptop with an individual IP address.
(I had to remember to set an individual IP address for each possible location for the laptop card / usb adaptor as I got caught out first time and found I couldn't connect via wireless if I put the card or USB adaptor in a different slot, I now have two addresses for a card-bus slot on one laptop and six! for the other laptop with USB ports).

So each PC has it's own fixed IP address, subnet mask is the same for all, gateway is the same for all and primary DNS server and alternate DNS is the same for all. The router set up has been changed so the box "use router as DHCP server" is not ticked.
Now all requests for a web page are passed through the router without interpretation and on the whole this seems very stable I haven't had any "page not found" errors for quite a while.

If you want to try a manual set up it might help, but remember to log into the router first and backup the current setup in case you need to go back, un-tick the "use router as DHCP server" and then save changes, log-out. then go into the PC adaptor TCP/IP settings and set the following (for example)

TCP/IP settings:
IP address:192.168.0.2 (for the first pc and increment by one for each successive pc/laptop)
Sub Net mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway:192.168.0.1
Primary DNS: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
Alternate DNS: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
(from the router status page or the advice of your ISP)
If you are using XP the changes are instant, if not, reboot the pc to update the adaptor settings.

Using the router in auto DHCP /DNS mode is much easier to set up but I found as you have that trying to surf the web in this mode is very hit and miss!

Best of luck

Will.

Well - I had a new router through the post from Netgear, and it did exactly the same thing as the original. I am now awaiting a change to my ISP that is going to happen next week. Once the new ISP is in then I will try the router again with some of the suggestions in this thread - but I am not very hopeful.

Hugely frustrating.

Re: Netgear DG834G intermittent timeout/connectivity

I have a new DG834G wireless router that seems to have a very similar problem. I've been hoping that someone on this thread might have an answer. I have tried the solutions here without success.

Problem:
The router frequently fails to catch a web page - coming up with an error message / page not available.

This happens whether I am using wireless or via Ethernet cable.

The unavailable pages can almost always be loaded successfully by going "back" and re-pressing the link to the page. They invariably succeed second time.

It is an infuriating fault!

I have tried setting the DNS figure from the Router Status page (ADSL port section) into Windows Network Connections / Wireless Network Connections / Properties / Internet protocol TCP/ICP / Properties / Use the following DNS server adresses

(IS that what I was supposed to do???)

Any other solutions / things to try would be very welcome.

Thanks,
Jim

This is interesting because I am getting the exact same problem as WillBristow. Same router as well.

All was working fine until a few days ago when the router would seem to be unresposive or very slow. Pinging the router would bring back a ping of 4ms, usually it averages zero.

Just a few minutes ago I had to reboot the router manually to get it to respond.

I will try moving the antenna etc and seeing if that fixes it. Also, for my router the DG834GT there are no firmware updates at netgear. We'll see if moving the antenna can solve the problem. Thanks for that post.

EDIT: OK It just happened again, I was on msn messenger, right after I posted the above, internet dropped, and couldnt access router page. I put my hand on the router, and it suddenly let me access the router page and connected to net and all was good. Take my hand away, and it goes unresponsive again.

I tried putting the router up high on my bookcase flat, away from everything, still wouldnt work. I have now put it in a semi vertical position temporarily and its now working. Very very wierd problem, Netgear HAVE to sort this out. Hopefully with a firmware because if its a hardware fault and I have to send it back and wait for a replacement then I will be severly pissed off. I didnt pay around £100 for this
