[DIRECTV] directv picture not as clear as dish net

at my old home i had dish network and the picture was superb. in my apartment i just got directv installed and find the picture to be worse than dish network. it is not as clear or sharp. my signal strength is 98 and 97 on both transponders, so that cannot be an issue. i have heard that dish's picture is better because they have alot more bandwidth to send out, is that true? also i have a regular hughes tivo receiver connected to an hdtv ready toshiba tv. i have heard that non-hd broadcasts do not look as good on an hdtv as they do on a normal tv. the tv is connected to the receiver with an s-video cable and the red and white audio composite cables. this is the best connection, right? would a monster thx s-video cable make a significant difference than the regular s-video cable, and if so, why would i need to get it to have a clear picture when the dish network picture looked better using just composite cables?

Re: [DIRECTV] directv picture not as clear as dish

Very few people ever seem to notice a difference between Dish and DirecTV unless something else is wrong. They're so close that the naked eye can't tell....

I'm not sure that Dish has more satellite capacity than DirecTV either. If they do, I'm sure it's temporary and soon DirecTV will have more, then Dish will get more, and they'll continue going back and forth.

For a non-HD setup, yes, S-Video is the best connection (vs composite and RF). I would NEVER suggest that anyone buy Monster Cables for any reason. It's your money though... Will Monster Cables make a difference. I don't believe they will. Try different S-Video cables, low-cost ones, to see if maybe you've got a bad one.

I haven't even seen DISH in two years, but I can see how crappy DirecTV looks compared to two years ago when I first got it. Its called over-compressing the signal.

I had Dish when I was living with my ex-girl, then once getting my house, switched to DTV for NFL Sunday Ticket. On how everything was setup, DTV looked just as good, but looked even better when buying a monster s-video cable. You would think that any cable would do, but in fact, you do want to invest money into a name brand such as Monster Cable. After having the cable installed and letting it "burn" in for roughly 10 hours, as suggested, the picture is outstanding, no "ghosting" as you sometimes get with s-video, and the colors are brilliant.

Re: [DIRECTV] directv picture not as clear as dish net

your tv is not setup correctly with directv personally i change the settings at the house when watching dish and directv.

dish's picture is good but its way to soft for my liking easily remedied by turn up the sharpness.

with directv its the other way around its going to look like crap with the sharpness way too high.

and if your looking for an high quality s-video cable look for the accoustic research master series s-video cable it blows away anything monster can throw at in the s-video department.

or try canare cable's

I think you got some really good answers here...

You are comparing what Dish looked like on a standard TV with what DTV looks like on a HDTV (according to this other thread). The HDTV will show every imperfection on channels not shown in HD. Dish wouldn't look as good as you remember either.

A friend of mine bought a HDTV, (stayed with DTV) and noticed this... staying with the same provider.

DID you have the HD TV with DISH???

If not that is probably what you are seeing... unlike an analog TV it has the resolution to show up defects.

Having gone from DTV to DISH I would say the picture is SLIGHTLY better overall... but certainly NOT night and day.
