Bellsouth ADSL2+ in 2005

I have seen some post about more speed in 2005 (June). While these are only rumors I was wondering if the new article today here at BBR can help confirm some of this.

Also now the news article is out can anyone tell us what speeds we may see and other features? I cant wait!

From what I have heard from the company, they will be shooting for a 25 MB "pipe" into the house to deliver internet, 2-3 standard video feeds plus 1 HD feed. I am sure at some point VOIP will be in the mix also. I have heard rumors that it will be more of an 'on demand' type application to conserve bandwidth. So, if you turn on the TV, and select ESPN, it sends a video request to the server to start streaming that channel. This is different from what the cable co's do.

Again, this is just inside rumor & speculation from managers I have spoken with. I do know that in Mobile, AL, where I am at, is one of the 20 test markets that will begin to build and deliver this sometime in 2005.

I saw this chart and it kind of bothers me but I would be BS is doing something to fix this.

According to this ADSL2+ chart those 24Mbit speed would have to be in the first 2-3k ft of the loop.

Also according to the chart I would only see around 8-9Mbits...which I wouldnt think is enought for video but I would be very happy with that speed.

If the bond the line check out the chart on page 5 of this pdf.

Yah, from what I've also heard, they are going to strategically place DSLAMs within 5000ft of neighborhoods to be able to achieve the 20-25mb bandwidth requirements.

I'm less than 500 feet from the pedestal (IFITL). I wonder what they will do with IFITL users?

Either there is something I don't understand about the technology or most of this video over DSL stuff is just hype. It takes 18 megabits/sec plus to deliver a high-quality HD video feed. DirecTV is using 14-18 megabits/sec for their HDTV feeds now, and the 14 megabit/sec channels look pretty crappy for HDTV. On the other hand, the 18 megabit/sec stuff looks pretty good. Standard definition video needs at least 3-6 megabits/sec to look good. 3 megabits is marginal and 6 looks pretty darn good.

A normal family household has at least 2 and usually 3 or 4 television sets. With kids and a wife it's entirely possible 4 different video feeds would be going at once. If everyone was watching HDTV that's a nominal 72 megabits/sec data rate. Even with 4 SDTV feeds you're in the 25 megabits/sec or so range for high quality video and sound. That leaves no room in the ADSL2+ circuit for VoIP or Internet surfing.

BellSouth should mimic Verizon and go ahead and make the jump to FTTH (fiber to the home). Bandwidth needs are not going down nor holding stable-- they are increasing. I just don't understand this talk of being happy with 20-25 megabits/sec pipes to a home to deliver a plethora of video and data services. It just won't cut it unless the video is compressed to the point it looks like a 320K video stream viewed on your PC today.

I would not be able to get it. :(

I want to know if I would even be able to get it as a BellSouth engineering document that said I was 5800 ft. from the CO was wrong but actually I am 16200 ft. So, will I be able to get it? What speeds should I expect?

I have been reading more about this and if they bond the lines I bet you will be able to get that speed at much longer distances.

The money it is going to cost to upgrade I would bet they have if figured out to get it to more people. I dont think it would be cost effective to only give it to people inside of 5k. That is what was said about Xtreme but from what I understand via remote people have it a long way out side of even normal dsl distance.

I have faith BSFA will take care of us!

Bmeeks they are going to use some sort of compression on the video. The question is how much compression will it be and how will the picture quality look with the compression they use.

Thats correct. I'm sure that they will use some sort of compression on the HDTV as does DirecTV (I have them too w/ the HD package). Some of their HD feeds range from 14mb down to 7-8 mb compressed. I agree alot of it looks crappy at times, but hopefully BellSouth will be able to compress better without as much loss. I think direcTV uses something called statMUXing (automatically tracks compression and adjust on the fly). I think that standard definition TV takes something like 2-3mb per stream with MPEG4 encoding.

I just have my fingers crossed that 25mb will be enough for everything, including atleast a 6mb internet conenction because we all know that comcast & others will be there at some point and we need to keep up.

This would also possibly allow them to bypass all the local licensing they would have to go through with traditional cable type feeds.

You haven't seen any equipment for IPTV being installed in a CO because there isn't any approved IPTV equipment yet. Maybe an ultra density DSLAM is what you're referring to?

From what I have been told, the high density DSLAMs (7300 ASAM: »www.alcatel.com/products/product···7300asam) will be able to achieve what the Ultra High density will do. The only thing is the original, first DSLAMs (4 ports per card) variety will no t be compatable.
