[speed/latency] new wires/new co dist/new modem?

For the first ~1 yr, I had 700+ down rates using VZ supplied Fujits/Spdprt/RA14 modem (my acct. is entirely thru VZ). A couple mo. ago, VZ replaced some "cables" near the CO. Now my down speed is 200-400; no changes made on my end. Tech (VZ) came out and said that the new wiring may have put me over the limit of the Fujits modem (he said I am ~15Kfeet from CO, which is WRLDWAXA)and that I need to change to a Westell modem (ATM, I think). He said he has tried to get VZ to supply the Westell modem to people like me in the past, but they say no. I made the requisite phone calls and VZ has agreed that a new modem is in order, but warned me that if the "limited number of" ATM slots fill up during processing of the order, I could be left with no DSL. Any opinions? Does it make sense that the modem/ATM change will help? thanks

Techs Please Offer Further Advice!!!

It's in Verizon's interest to get you off Frame and on to ATM. The only advantage you would see, is getting your 768/128 back to what it should be. The switching process can be highly annoying. To keep your existing email accounts you have to downgrade to dialup(free for 30 days), wait till you lose sync on the Fujitsu, and upgrade the dialup to DSL.

Since they screwed your service, and it is in their interest to get you to switch, I'd try and get something back for the trouble. I'd tell them I was willing to go through the aggravation of the switch, if they would be willing to condition my pair (remove bridge taps, etc) or switch my pair, so that I could get 1.5/384 speeds after the switch is completed. Email confirmation (written) of that would be nice. The limit for 1.5 in fGTE is around 13800 or 14200, I'm not sure, and you need to confirm it before you do this.

A word of warning. If you are having speeds that low, your loop may have actually grown to the point that you will end up not qualifying for DSL at all. The first thing to do is call billing, ask for your loop length, say thank you and hang up. You'll likely have to decide what to do. You may well be 19000, 20000 now. What you have now is not good for what you're paying, it is however much better than dialup. If you initiate the change, you could end up losing your service. I don't know if you have options if that happens or what your exact location is.Don't work off just my opinion. Wait for some of the techs to offer advice. Do find out what your existing loop length is.

thanks for the help. i called billing, but they are closed. will call tomorrow and monday if necessary. the co distance checker on dslreports does not give a number. if distance has change significantly, i may be sol. they sould, however, make a good effort to help, since i have been paying for service for a couple years, and the problem "should" have been anticipated by them. is this kind of problem common? when the 800 # representative told me the ATM slots may fill up, i said that they should reserve one for me since i have been hosed to some extent. the rep said that could not be done. clearly it can be done. is this something to run up the VZ ladder to the consumer affairs (prez appeals(?)) dept? thanks

I had a similar problem with line distance. The credit card that the autopay had been on expired and I didn't notice the email notice that I had received. They said no problem and placed the reorder, but a few days later despite having had signal they canceled me and said I no longer qualified despite having them as my ISP for 1.5+ years. I still have no broadband and am back on 56k...

I called VZ over the weekend (3 times)and was told twice that this house was Ok for 1.5MBit DSL (I am paying for 768 and getting 200-400). On the third call I was told that I am 17,500 ft from CO. They sid that distence was "no problem" for a 1.5 connection. Any opinions? Will a change from Fujits/Frame to Westell/ATM make a big difference in downspeed at that distance?
