| [modem/router] westell 2200 won't work!
ACK! please help! emboldened by assurances from y'all (and i do appreciate all the advice), i decided to try unhooking my old 2100 and hooking up the new 2200 in preparation for the speed upgrade tomorrow. unhooked the router from the mix, hooked up the 2200 (all lights green---so far so good), hooked in my laptop (so i wouldn't have to crawl around the desktop changing cables---the desktop cable is too short to reach the modem, so i have to change to a longer one to reach it) went into the 192.168.1.1 utility, chose VC configuration from the config menu and set the 0/35 to disabled, which i have to assume is bridge mode, since the choices were enable or disable (left the other things---0/36, etc. alone; they were by default in bridge mode), and then set DHCP configuration to OFF. figured once i did this on the laptop, it was good to go even on the desktop; the changes are all in the modem, right?
didn't have to take the step of setting up username in the router, since that's been that way for over a year. but did check that everything was ok there; it was.
hooked up the modem to the router, the laptop back to the router, and rebooted everything (modem, pc, router). should work, right?
wrong! it says it can't get dhcp. went into my router utility (192.168.2.1) and it showed that i was disconnected from the WAN; i clicked connect (which usually works), and no go. repeated tries failed. no way was it connecting. yet the router IS set to provide dhcp.
so i tried bypassing the router again and going directly into the westell utility, to check that the settings took, but to my horror, i can't get back in---it looks for 192.168.1.1 as if it is a webpage, and says it can't find it, nor open the "search page" (i guess to find it because it thinks its a webpage).
so i bit the bullet and repeated the unhook/hook process on the desktop using the 2200 modem connected directly to the pc...still no access to the westell utility when i bypass the router, no internet connection with the router in the picture. even after reboots.
finally hooked everything back up to the old 2100 (modem, router, pcs) and all works perfectly again (thank heavens); i'm connected.
so what did i do wrong? i mean, i wrote the darn FAQ on putting the 2200 in bridge mode, so my face is red , but i can't figure out what's wrong. and i can't even check the westell utility because it won't let me back in now. -- graciella! | Disabled is not bridge mode; you need to change the properties of 0/35 to Bridge from PPPoE.
To get back into the modem config, you will temporarily have to assign your PC a specific IP (vs DHCP) -- 192.168.1.x (where x is between 2 and 254). Plug the PC directly into the modem and then go to the config. -- The general public is stupid. |

late edit: i'm guessing you mean to leave it enabled and click edit, then i'll be able to set it to bridge? duh! gotta add that to the FAQ if it works . thanx. will report back soon as i play some more.

| You can use the laptop. No, you don't need RASPPPoE -- you just need a PC on the same subnet as the 2200. Just assign it an IP (vs "obtain automatically") and connect direct to the modem.
Next to 0/35 in the ocnfig is an "Edit" button. On that popup, change the Protocol from PPPoE to Bridge. The options on the bottom half of the dialog will change; the mode should also say "Bridge". Then click "set VC". The modem will likely ask to reset itself at this point. -- The general public is stupid. |

| said by PetePuma :You can use the laptop. no go. here's what i did; maybe you can see the flaw.
disconnected the 2100, and connected the 2200 to the phone line, powerline, and the laptop. rebooted the laptop (all lites on modem lit). went into control panel, network settings, right clicked the LAN setting, set the ip from automatically to 192.168.2.11 (not used anywhere else.) even set dns servers, just in case.
rebooted laptop (this is a win2k laptop; the desktop is xp, but for this, was out of the mix). tried going to 192.168.1.1---same problem as before: it starts looking for an internet address and then can't find one. rebooted the modem, rebooted the laptop. tried again...no luck. still trying to find a web address.
even tried 192.168.2.11, same result.
i just can't get into the utility. i wonder if this is because i erroneously set the 0/35 to disable in the first try, remember? so nothing seems to be working there; it's inaccessible. though all the lites are lit.
help! (btw, the reason i can post this is that i'm on my desktop ). -- graciella! "not tonight dear, I have DSL." Creating SuperOrganizations Worldwide |

next edit: i'm SO embarrassed---guess there's no way i can just erase the whole thread huh??
ok, i just got into the westell util. and re-enabled 0/35 and then set it to bridge mode (duh). am going now to hook the dsl line up to the 2200, reset the ip to obtain auto, and try to hook into the router. wish me luck!!! (have i said i'm SO embarrassed?)
at least i learned something---if this works (the hooking up to the router, i mean) i'm going to rewrite that FAQ to be just a wee more clear and specific .

Pete, shouldn't she just reset the modem and start over. |

| reply to JohnA said by JohnA :Pete, shouldn't she just reset the modem and start over. no, freenow, it was a question of resetting MY DA*N BRAIN . have i said i'm SO embarrassed???
anyway, it's hooked up to the router, all is well, and aside from a BAD bruising to my ego and my geek goddess reputation (never said i knew squat about networking ), all is fine! and one good thing that came out of this: i am, as we speak, re-writing my FAQ on putting the westell 2200 in bridge mode to include a tad more info for the other "had a long nite with patients and was working on half a brain" users out there like me .
PetePuma, you are a lifesaver. freenow, i know you would have jumped right in if pete hadn't come to the rescue.
said it before, will say it again: you guys are great. -- graciella! "not tonight dear, I have DSL." Creating SuperOrganizations Worldwide |

1 edit | said by JohnA :See if your stats are any different. You'll be able to see the upstream now. can't tell right now in terms of 3/768, since the speed upgrade hasn't gone into effect yet, but i will say that the speed test i just did now is just the slightest bit faster on the download and almost 20 points slower on the upload (1488/363 vs. 1485/380 here---going to try ANL). at this point, i'm hooked back into the router, but with the 2200 in bridge instead of the 2100.
will take the time to switch stuff around again once i get the upgrade, just because i know others will be interested. but for me, i'll stick with the 2200 as long as it's working .
glad you helped me feel brave and learned two lessons: 1. you can undo even the stupidest mistakes; 2. NEVER tackle a techie job when you've been up with a patient all nite and only had two cups of coffee . -- graciella! "not tonight dear, I have DSL."

re: the sleep---from your mouth to the powers that be's ears! . thanx.
