| It's a mixed blessing. Raising the minimum wage gives companies more incentive to hire illegal immigrants, pay off the books, and ship jobs out. Costs also rise. -- There ain't no vista, there ain't no view, and there sure as hell ain't no vista of no view! |

| reply to intocable7 Higher minimum wage means more money for workers but I think there could be more cons than pros to this. With the higher minimum wage, fewer companies will be willing to hire and many of the employees they have at the bottom rung may be let go, as companies will not be able to pay them. Also, fewer workers around will probably mean they will make existing workers work harder for their extra money. Not much we can do...it's a lose-lose situation either way. -- Please use all available doors...you have 33 to choose from. |

More taxes from the ones that keep their jobs. What about all the people that get canned because of the raise in minimum? It could balance out, or maybe even less taxes come in. -- There ain't no vista, there ain't no view, and there sure as hell ain't no vista of no view! |

EDIT: My bad. The states have the right to set their minimum wage. The vast majority of states are at the federal level, including New York. |

Edit:
Where an employee is subject to both the state and federal minimum wage laws, the employee is entitled to higher of the two minimum wages. There is federally mandated min wage, $5.15, after which states can choose to go higher. Fed Min goes a lot further in Kansas than it does in NY. Sorry, to everybody who thinks it is a disaster, but there needs to be some kind of weighting based on the local economy.
Sheesh, even FL gets 6.15/Hr. -- The reason you think I'm way on the left is 'cause you're so far to the right.

| reply to intocable7 Just remember, New York includes a lot more than just New York City and Long Island. Up by Watertown, you can get a pretty nice 2 bedroom apartment for 400 a month. -- There ain't no vista, there ain't no view, and there sure as hell ain't no vista of no view! |

And at 5.15/hour its almost affordable, but more than two weeks take home for one month's rent still at that rate
But the commute is going to be a killer. Lake Erie ought to be pretty though!
I'm for a weighting, but I don't think upstaters would take it well if downstaters near NY made more -- The reason you think I'm way on the left is 'cause you're so far to the right. Sygate Personal Firewall Why I mistrust Zone Labs |

1 edit | reply to atangel You'd have to have some amazing binoculars to see Lake Erie from Watertown... (I think you meant Lake ONTARIO!) LOL Actually, I'm one County North of where Watertown is, and Watertown is EXPENSIVE, being the nearest "city". However, unemployment is extremely high, and what few jobs there are, are strictly minimum wage... unless you're lucky enough to work in one of the major factories, but that's only about 10% of the available jobs. (And, you have to wait for someone to die for an opening.) On the positive side, it's CHEAP to live here, real cheap. How much do they get down there for a beer in a neighborhood tavern? |
