it's sorta already here...

you can do the same thing today using netmeeting, msn, yahoo, ect. all you need is a $18 webcam and a $3 mic and there is no subscription fee...true there are some people that don't have PC's but using VOIP with broadband I'm sure they have a PC.

Re: it's sorta already here...

True in a sense, but its still kind of like saying "What do I need a car for? A horse can get me there just the same." Last time I used YIM or MSN voicechat, the sound quality was terrible, and its usualy only half duplex.

If the sound quality was at least the same quality of a 900mhz cordless phone and the picture quality/framerate was at least as good as a decent webcam, I can see a reason to buy it.

I'm sure they'll put an option on the phone to toggle cam on and off, so if you dont want the person ot see you, you dont have to let them. At the very least you can cover the lens.

Since the porn industry has been one of the major pushes in quite a few technologies, I can see a company offering video phone sex, hehehe.

iChat A/V works incredibly well and when Tiger OS X.4 hits it will support multiple user conferences.

video phone sex will never work. if you can see the ugly girls on the other side, you'll most likely puke. either that or they'll have to start paying more for actually good looking girls.

Re: it's sorta already here...

True, but they do already have girls that go on cam and stuff, so a video phone wouldnt be much different.

yes mostly with the pc;i think it will be alot bigger in a few years with better upload,

for you people that don't want to see the person...dont turn on the video;but this is nice to have when you DO want to see them, like for me,i video message with family about once a week...that some of who i can only see about twice a year.[ofcourse waiting for upload to increase for it to be what it should].

voip without pc ,would be for people without broadband,i guess!

Apple's iChat really has those beat. Full screen video conferencing through iChat is amazing. Uses MPEG4 currently, switching to H.264(even higher quality at lower bitrate) next year when Tiger comes out.

I've been doing this for a couple years. Guess I was more ahead of my time than I thought. My daughter and I both have DSL so we have perfect picture and voice now and don't have to spend anything more.
