Bernie Kerik - NYCer's views?

After seeing Bernie Kerik's nomination and subsequent withdrawal from consideration, I was wondering what the NYC view of Bernie is and how good he'd have been at the job.

I'm not talking about the dems/repubs/libs/cons stuff you see in Yahoo posts(generally useless rants) but rather how you as NYCers perceived Mr. Kerik's characteristics and qualifications relative to doing the job as DHS leader.

My outsider's view is that he is hardworking, street smart, good people skills and one who'd cut to the chase in dealing with security. What might work against him is that he's not from a traditional "public sector official" background and may run into opposition from bureaucrats, partisan politicians and traditional insiders who hold budget and organizational power.

As in all BBR posts, keep it friendly

I think he was all smoke and mirrors riding on the coat tails of Rudy Gulianni's popularity after 9 /11.
I think both of them cashed in on the tragedy, but thats just me and its a gut feeling.

Kerik looks like a garden variety opportunist who has some talent ingratiating himself with rising stars and then doing whatever necessary to convert that attachment to personal gain.

He may have a well cultivated tough guy persona but he's as ethically challenged as the sleaziest politician yet lacks even a modicum of political and management skill.

Finally, given the daily revelations of misconduct and incredibly bad judgement coming out of the media's investigation, he's also not too smart. An IQ in the low 70s would have warned this bozo that he was digging his own grave.

As someone who was born in Brooklyn and raised in Manhattan, I'm embarrassed to have to claim this bum as one of ours.
