Daisy chaining 2 routers together?

Need advice on hooking together 2 routers. The purpose is to use 2 wireless notebooks and 4 wired desktop computers on one cable modem.

The routers are a Microsoft MN-100 and a Linksys WRT54G wireless router.

Any help would dbe appreciated!!!

Connecting two routers often is not a fun task. You have problems like both routers issuing DHCP local IP addresses, etc. However, if you insist, set the router that is directly connected to the cable modem as a "gateway" in it's firmware while the second router should be set as a "router" and NOT a gateway. Both routers need to have different local IP addresses, they both can't be 192.168.1.1 for example, subnet mask must be the same, DNS on router #2 might have to be manually set.

My suggestion to you is if you have any problems, just go out and buy a 4 port switch and use the wireless router only with the switch plugged into one of it's LAN ports. That way, you have a total of 7 wired LAN ports plus the wireless connection. Switches are usually inexpensive and it will save you headaches, more than likely.

Remember, using a 2nd router really means you just want it to be a switch anyway. You don't want it to do any of the normal router functions since router#1 would be the firewall, issue DHCP addresses, etc. So instead of figuring out how to make router#2 a switch, save yourself the trouble and just go out and buy a $20 switch and it should just be plug and play. Good luck.

My advice is to attach the linksys wrt54G as your only router hooked up to the cable modem. I would assign the MN-100 a LANIP manually (ie in the MN-100 LAN menu) within the subnet of the linksys but outside its Dynamic DHCP pool. I would then turn DHCP off in the MN-100 (as well as rip). Plug one of the MN-100 LAN ports into one of the Linksys LAN ports. The MN-100 will act solely as a switch.
You will have 6 wired ports available. (assuming both routers are 4 port routers).

This Faq is helpful (just ignore the wireless aspect rest is same same)

I disagree with preston on this one. Its not a difficult task and is a helpful learning process on the capabilities and structure of a router. Give it a go, will be here to help. (its not like learning linux or anything )

If the MS-100 does not perform up to your standards as a switch then consider buying a switch.

What about daisy chaining wireless routers for increased wireless range? Is that possible?

Thanks!

Yes. Without details of what you want to do it is hard to suggest exactly how to do it.

I agree - it is not difficult. Take it step by step and there shouldn't be any problems.

Michael,

Thanks, sorry for the lack of info. I didn't want to go into all that if it was impossible.:) I have the Trendnet TEW-311BRP (I believe this is a .11b router not .11g) and Netgear WGR614 routers (this is a backwards compatible .11g router). Both obviously have wireless capabilities.

I bought the second router to see if it would fix a problem I had with connecting via one of our laptops. Long story short - I ened up with two routers. One of them I haven't been using, but now we're moving to a bigger place and I would like to take advantage of them both and make sure I have good wireless coverage throughout the house.

I would also like to evntually add an Airport Express base station to the mix so I can use the iTunes and printing features, but thats secondary and I would settle for just getting the two routers I currently have to work together.

Thanks!

Bryan

I am not familiar with either of those routers. It sounds like you are looking for one of the routers to act as a repeater. If one router is connected to your Cable/DSL you can place the other a distance away from the first and have it forward anything it receives from a client to the first router and send anything it receives from the first router onto the client.

I am not sure either of these routers can function as a repeater.

The other other possibility is to wire the second router to the first if you have ethernet in your house at the location where you want to place the second router. The second router would act as an access point instead of a repeater. This would require a bit of configuration of the second router and, again, I am not sure if either of these routers can act as a simple access point.

Someone who knows more about these routers may be able to help.
