Strange email... actually from Comcast..??

I got an email this morning, it seems a bit strange. The sender was Comcast Online Communications. Anyone know if this is legit?

Dear Comcast Customer,

We are always looking to serve our customers and continuing to improve our service offerings. Today, we wanted to make you aware of a planned network upgrade - scheduled to take place on Sunday December 19, 2004 between 1:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time. This upgrade is designed to enable our High-Speed Internet customers to be among the first to access new information, entertainment and communication services. It also is designed to deliver additional network security and reliability, streamlined billing, and enhanced customer support and installations.

This marks our next step towards the delivery of the "connected home" - in which electronic devices and broadband services seamlessly work together to meet your lifestyle needs.

During this one day upgrade on Sunday December 19, 2004 between 1:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Pacific Standard! Time, we are providing the following guidance to customers:

Do not unplug or restart your cable modem, router or home networking gateway, or reboot your computer during this time frame.

Doing so could potentially cause a service interruption until the network upgrade is complete on Sunday December 19, 2004 at 4:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time. Please note: this guidance only pertains to modems, routers and gateways, and to your computer and we are not expecting any other changes with regards to the way you use your Internet service. (Note: If there is severe weather in your area, we ask you to make sure you follow normal precautions and turn off and unplug your computer).

We are available if you have any questions about this upgrade. You can reach us through our Online Customer Service Center, or if you would like to speak with a customer care representative, please contact us at 1-888-COMCAST.

Sincerely,

Comcast High-Speed Internet
Looks a bit fishy.... the email was in like 8pt font. I don't know why Comcast would tell me not to reboot/turn off my computer or modem/router.... almost sounds like someone wants my system up in hopes they can attempt to use it in a DDoS type attack????? I am lost...

Anyone?

Thanks in advance.. -Forest

That sounds somewhat fishy to me. Can you post the headers?

Nothing Comcast does on their end should require you to leave any of your equipment on. If they change their configuration while your modem is off, your modem will pick up the new configuration when it's powered back on. And nothing they do on their end should affect anything on your computer.

On the other hand, perhaps they are planning some network upgrades at that time, and they're suggesting that you not power down your modem because it may not be able to reconnect for a period of time during the upgrade. They could have the upgrade planned so that there's no interruption in service unless the modem needs to re-authenticate, or your PC needs to pull an IP address from the DHCP server. In that case, if you want to use the internet during that time period, leave your stuff on. If you don't care if you're down for a while, go ahead and turn it off.

Good luck with that! There was an "upgrade" last Sunday morning in Maryland that created a huge DNS problem which took 5 days to get fixed.

Things still are not right take a look at the following link:

»Comcast Hostname ( Where Did It Go )

Once again good luck.

If you're in an ex-attbi area, I bet they're switching you over to the new provisioning system. During that time, it's possible that modems won't be able to authenticate or pull a config file, but modems already online will remain online.

There are other threads on this, but AFAIK the only difference is that you'd use the Comcast CD to provision your account or a new modem, rather than going to the SAS site/proxy like in the past. I don't know though, because we haven't been upgraded yet AFAIK.

Yes, that is the e-mail informing you of the cut-over to the new provisioning system. The new provisioning system allows for easier self provisioning, makes 'Classic Comcast' and 'New Comcast' (former ATTBI) on the same provisioning system nation wide and ultimately causes less customer - Comcast interactions.

Correct, if your modem is off during the change it will not re-sync until the change is complete.

Yeah, (as Qumahlin knows) they make the DHCP leases longer and then kill the DHCP server. If you p/c the modem then it will not gain sync for about 6-12 hrs. If you release/renew you will have the same problem most likely. Just don't touch anything for that time and you won't run into a problem. This actual step usually starts at midnight and ends before noon the next day so very little people are affected.

It says in a big red blinking letters STOP Portland.Follow Bedrock Procedures.

Did someone hack this or did one of the techs working at comcast change this.

No one hack it.They are changing over to the new Bedrock system, and they don't want sub's from that area to use the old SAS system now.Comcast put the warning in their.
