Strange Musicmatch Jukebox 10 Issue?

I was just curious if any other MMJB10 users have noticed this... Immediately after installing MMJB 10, I notice a single white pixel in the top lefthand corner of the desktop (I have a dark wallpaper). It only appears after Windows XP fully loads and is not a monitor issue (it is covered by any window placed over it). It's just a very minor thing but I was curious if anyone else sees it. It could be just me, I guess...

I use Musicmatch Jukebox 10 and I never saw that before.
For fun, I'm going to uninstall MMJB and see if it disappears.

[EDIT] It's gone! A few seconds after I started the uninstall, I watched the white dot disappear before my eyes!
Crazy stuff, huh?
Now I'll reinstall it as I'd miss my OnDemand!

Yes, in the uppermost lefthand corner... a tiny white dot. I can watch it appear right when XP is fully loaded (all systray icons loaded).

Re: Strange Musicmatch Jukebox 10 Issue?

I have found the cause.... Musicmatch 10 installs a process called mim.exe. Go into Task Manager and end the process mim.exe. The little white dot will disappear before your eyes.... If anyone can offer additional info as to what mim.exe is, I'd appreciate it...

It seems it's loaded at startup by "mimboot.exe". You can go into msconfig and uncheck it so it doesn't load but it's loaded and stays resident every time you run MMJB 10.

With mim.exe running.

With mim.exe stopped.

I just found another interesting (and slightly disturbing) thing that mim.exe does and that is that it won't allow you to format a drive while in XP. I have a third hdd (E) that I use exclusively for backup images and I normally format it in Windows when I decide to start fresh with a new full image. It seems that with mim.exe running, it "locks" additional physical drives and won't allow you to format them in Windows. If I try to format, I get the above image (top). If I end the mim.exe process, I can get right in and do the format (bottom pic). I did contact MM asking just what this process is and hopefully they'll get back to me.

Re: Strange Musicmatch Jukebox 10 Issue?

Yes, that's it... I found it more of a curiosity than an issue but I find the inclusion of "mim.exe", which runs at startup and is the cause of the "white dot" to be something I'd rather not have running all the time. I've even had a few issues with it at shutdown and it's popped up an error message 2 or 3 times. I decided to go back to version 9 until they get the kinks worked out of this new version.

I updated musicmatch 9 to 10 because 9 would constantly run at over 90% processor time. I had to set it to below normal priority. It wouldn't play music correctly unless I set it lower. I installed a new version of 9 and it worked for a day. I installed 10 twice and it will close after displaying the splash screen and playing its opening theme, usually it is cut short. I do not have the paid version. Is there any other way to notify Musicmatch of this?
I have WInXP Pro SP2

Re: Strange Musicmatch Jukebox 10 Issue?

After up?grading to 10, my cpu would peg at 90% for no good reason while I played music. Poking around, I noticed that if I "login" to online feature, the CPU would drop to almost nothing. OK, one bug nailed (I reported it).

I've got the mim.exe crash as well. But for me, it occurs just about ever time a new track begins to play!

Another ugly bug I reported: mmjb would get into a state where it would crash every time I tried to go to the online features. Evidently, cybersitter (which I have installed) was blocking access to an mmjb website. That's hardly a good reason for an applicaiton to crash! But at least I figured it out. Sadly, they couldn't when I sent them 2 different reports.

Re: Strange Musicmatch Jukebox 10 Issue?

I have nothing else running like cybersitter. I guess I will wait for an update for 10. I will use WIndows Media Player in the meantime. I really like Music Match but it is just starting to plain suck.

JumpstreetUK

@edin.blu

I also have the problem of V10 showing the splash screen and then crashing. All previous versions worked fine. I have the paid version plus future upgrades. Asked about a refund but was ignored.
So far I have been pointed at 3 patched versions of V10 - all of which have had the same problem. I've gone back to V9 but now seriously considering giving up on Musicmatch and going to a competitor's product - maybe even Microsoft!!!

I see the white dot also. I went into task manager and ended the mim.exe process and the dot disappeared. I also noticed that with musicmatch 10, when you load the program up, after 30 seconds the program freezes for about 2 minutes and at the bottom it says "checking for compnent updates". then after 2 mintes it says checking cancelled , but i didnt cancel it. Also, most times that I try to edit track info in musicmatch 10, an error occurs and the program is shut down. This upgrade is shit. I want Musicmatch 9 back. too many bugs in 10.

Geez, you would think they'd see it on their machines. You and I, I'm sure, have 2 completely different machines and different video adapters/monitors and we both see it. I think I'll just reinstall MMJB 9. I don't see any reason why "mim.exe" (whatever it is) should run at startup anyway and in the process deny you complete access to any additional hard drives you may have on your system.

Re: Strange Musicmatch Jukebox 10 Issue?

They just sent me this e mail

Hello Mike,

I apologize for the difficulty you are experiencing using Musicmatch Jukebox.

Mimboot.exe is a startup application for our server [mim.exe]. When a computer is rebooted, mimboot initializes mim so that it can run in the background. Mim is responsible for watching all of the music on your computer that is also in your jukebox library, as well as any folders added to the watchfolders. When music on your system is moved, renamed, or deleted, it gets updated in the jukebox library and the next time that you launch the program - your music will be up-to-date.

It appears that the white pixel you are referring to may be a small section of a hidden window that is running to allow mim.exe to perform the tasks required to keep your music library up to date.

Sincerely,
Shannon

Cool, thanks for the info!
That's probably why it prevents formatting drives in Windows... it (mim.exe) has access to and monitors all your drives for any changes you've made to your music collection. It would be nice if you could disable it completely in Musicmatch itself, though. It's no big deal, really as I can just end the process if I need to format a drive.

I hate version 10. I uninstalled it. It never exited properly, there are all kinds of background processes it adds to the system, it just seems like a huge resource hog and I don't see that many benefits from 9. Just my two cents...

And isn't it kind of ironic that when you go to that oldversion page it still lists 8.2 as the "current" version of MusicMatch.......as though somebody's trying to tell us something......like maybe it ought to be?????

I'm using MMJB 10 and I use Norton Internet Security. While I'm ripping CDs to my HD MIM.exe tries to access the Internet, and keeps trying. The good news is, you can block it and your system will continue ripping. You have to wonder though, what info is it sending to MMJB???

I bought v8 and saw that MMJB was heading down a path I would rather not take. Uninstalled it long ago for 7.5 and my 'puter is happy again.

IMHO v7.5 is the last true unbloated version of MMJB.

I have had and used MMJB for the longest time. Recently there program has become bloated. I decided just for giggles to update MMJB 9 to 10 and right away was plagued with a problem.

I had all my music tagged under MMJB 9 but when I upgraded to 10 I lost allot of the tags on my music files or MMJB wouldn't see them. Anyways, I tried to re-tag them and MMJB 10 would crash. Kept on happening till I switched back to MMJB 9.

As for the white dot, is to small to even notice.

I read this thread with much trepidation; I set up a new machine this past weekend only to realize I did not have my version 8 install for MM; I foolishly purchased and installed version 10, and that white dot showed up (I realized it was a process and googled mim.exe to find this thread). I have been in touch with MM, and their first response was to ignore what I wrote (quoted this tread, told them about mim.exe, etc) and give the canned "reinstall" spiel...for 20 bucks (for this version) and the extra 40 for lifetime, they should have a better response...now I have a real mad on...anyone know how I can get ver 8??

THANK YOU!!! First thing I am going to do when I get home tonight is unintall 10 and reinstall 8..THEN I am going to fire off an e-mail demanding a refund. I work in an IT/help dek, and this is an unacceptable situation!!!

I can't believe they left you (and us) hanging like this. Don't they QA the releases? Surely they knew about this???

My Musicmatch 10 won't shut down, it just hangs and I have to kill it. What a pos. Volume leveling also doesn't work. I second the sentiments about QA'ing a release. There's no way they could have done extensive QA on this. I'll be installing a previous version tonight.

Found this tidbit from someone who actually got some reply from Musicmatch:

"Mimboot.exe is introduced in to start up to run as a background thread when jukebox is closed to watch any music files that you've placed in the library.
Any changes made while jukebox is closed gets updated in the database.
However, when it's idle, it shouldn't be using a lot of resources."

I'm not sure how to really interpret all that... with some of the other things noted here...
For instance does the this mean it also tries to update tag info etc. and may be why it trys to generate internet access ?
